When I first got together with my husband in the mid-90’s the trendy urban apartment scene in Manchester was only just emerging; fast forward twenty years and there’s a huge and thriving community of city centre dwellers and its pretty exciting. Luckily, there are still some great old buildings in Manchester ripe for development. One of the latest to be transformed is the impressive Orient House, developed by property company Realstar Group, under a new rental brand called UNCLE.
Orient House on Granby Row is a Grade II listed building. Built in 1914, this former cotton warehouse has a grand exterior and inside boasts plenty of period character and architectural charm which has been given a modern twist – think exposed brick, vintage tiles, Farrow & Ball on the walls, neon signs etc. I was invited to an evening at the apartments along with several other interior-obsessed bloggers, by leading online furniture and homeware brand, MADE.com who have furnished the apartments in an inspired collaboration with UNCLE.
MADE.com prides itself on offering original design at affordable prices, working with fresh talent to create unique furniture and homeware collections. Here at Orient House, the furniture brand’s contemporary signature style really complements the building’s cool interior – wardrobes, sofas, coffee tables etc. all look fantastic and totally at home. (You could say it’s a match MADE.com in heaven!)
We were shown around by the UNCLE team who shared their enthusiasm for the building and the collaboration, plus the ethos of the rental brand with us. Its a new approach to the rental market, where the apartments are all owned by UNCLE and managed by onsite staff 7 days a week, which means things like repairs can be turned around quickly. They want to be known as ‘the landlord that’s got your back’ which is kind of reassuring – a bit like your favourite, trusted old uncle, in fact.
Residents are not charged any fees for moving in and not only do they have the benefit of a cool, furnished apartment, they also get full access to a yoga studio, gym, art studio and co-working space, all free to use. Pretty amazing!
After our tour of the building, the MADE.com team had laid on a fabulous supper in one of the apartments. The table looked beautiful with its yellow and blue theme – all the gorgeous tableware, including my forever favourite gold cutlery, was from MADE.com.
The menu and accompanying wines were to die for – all cooked to perfection and served from the apartment’s kitchen by the innovative Grape and Grain Catering Co.
Pretty amazing, huh?
The fab photos in this post were all captured by photographer, Ian Thraves. Massive thanks to Made.com, UNCLE and Grape and Grain for making us feel so welcome! If you’re looking for more home interior inspo, I love the ‘Unboxed’ section of MADE.com’s Inspiration page where you can check out their furniture and homeware in other real life settings.
