On our recent family camping trip to Delamere, we made sure we visited Go Ape which was practically next door to the campsite. Go Ape, if you don’t know, is a forest adventure for kids and adults with 29 venues dotted around the UK.
The classic Go Ape experience is a 2 – 3 hour Tree Top Adventure where you can zoom down zip wires and tackle various leaps and crossing challenges. To participate in a Tree Top Adventure you need to be aged 10 and upwards, plus a minimum height of 1.4m (4′ 7″) and a maximum of 130kg (20.5 stone). Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
Our boys, aged 7, 10 and 14 opted to try the Tree Top Junior course as they could do this one together and no adult is required to participate – only supervise from the ground, which was fine by me since I am recovering from sciatica and not up to anything quite so physical at the moment!
The staff buckled the boys into harnesses and talked them through how to move around the course safely.
Aimed at kids aged 7+ I did wonder if it would be too tame for the older two boys, but not at all – certainly not for a first experience of this sort of event. It was actually more challenging than I expected.
You have the option of crossing by two different paths – one is more steady and the other extra wobbly for added adrenaline, which we thought was a great idea. The course ends with a fun zip wire down to the forest floor where they can go back to the start and go around the course again.
The experience lasted for an hour and the boys completed probably 6 or 7 goes during their hour as it was relatively quiet on the day we went down, so there was not too much waiting around for a turn.
You can also enjoy Forest Segway at Delamere and certain other locations – check the Go Ape website for details.
At Delamere, the location is pretty stunning, set amongst all the tall trees, as you can see in this little video:
We had perfect weather too, luckily! The boys loved the experience and would definitely like to go again.
