Already the shops are filled with ‘throwaway’ plastic goods and cheap seasonal fashion. Knowing what we do know about the effects on the planet and its people, it’s hard to stomach the fact that so much of it will end up in landfill eventually. So this year, wouldn’t it be nice to think about Christmas gifting on a smaller scale, or at least buying thoughtful gifts that are more sustainable?
That’s where organisations like Traidcraft are good to turn to. They have been pioneering fair trade goods since the late 1970s and this season have launched a fabulous new collection called CREATE – a contemporary home and gift range, in partnership with inspiring fair trade artisans from around the world.
With a focus on handcrafted and artisanal homeware, using materials that are often upcycled, recycled or natural, these gifts come with a back story and are made to last. Furthermore, it’s satisfying to know that the craftspeople who created them will benefit from our purchases. I was pleased when Traidcraft invited me to share some of my favourite items with you, as I think they would all make the most perfect gifts for friends and family this Christmas:
Handmade bedding and bedspreads are guaranteed to delight. This beautiful and useful present would grace any guest bedroom and the above style suits the current trend for boho interiors perfectly. The Indian Kalamkari Printed Silk Bedspread is skilfully block printed by hand and is the ultimate, timeless gift to treasure through the years.
Something we’re lacking in our hallway is a practical bench or stool, so I love the look of this stylish Recycled Sari Charpoy Stool. The clever re-use of Sari fabrics means each stool is an original – I love that unique aspect and the design and colours are truly eye-catching.
I think everyone appreciates nice tableware anytime of year, but perhaps even more so at Christmas. I love this combination of vintage inspired striped handpainted mugs and other crockery items teamed with Acacia wood serving platters and bowls. The mugs would immediately brighten up anyone’s brew-time and kitchen, whilst the wooden items are so versatile – you can use them for snacks and food at a buffet or meal, but they also look gorgeous as decorative accessories in their own right.
Finally, how gorgeous is this Twisted Zig Zag Seagrass Basket, which I had the pleasure of photographing in my home? The quality is lovely – it’s robust and a really good size, too. The shape and the pattern, plus that handy pair of handles, make it the perfect modern basket for multiple uses.
Of course there are lots more inspirational artisan products on the Traidcraft website so do take a look if you are on the look out for unique and thoughtful gifts for your loved ones this season.
