Be ‘Outspired’ with the new DIY Outspiration App

There is a new little app out which, if you love a bit of outdoors DIY, you’re going to want to download onto your iPhone.

Outspiration

Called ‘Outspiration’ its a brand new mobile application from AkzoNobel that has just launched for the Apple iPhone.  (If you aren’t familiar with the name AkzoNobel, you will certainly know their brands Cuprinol, Dulux Weathershield and Hammerite.)

Outspiration is all about inspiring us to get outdoors and get painting, with the app motivating us and helping with useful tips and know-how, plus features such as:

Visualiser – Allows you to visualise the colour of your outdoor furniture, fences or walls, so you can try it out before lifting a brush

Weather – This is such a useful tool with our unreliable climate!

Simply check the forecast of your local area – it will tell you if you can get painting in the next day or so.

Help & Advice – Every month the app will be updated with new content covering trends and ideas and inspiring how-to’s

Projects – View the Outspiration gallery of other users’ outdoor projects and why not upload your own to ‘Outspire’ others!

Promotions – Enjoy regular competitions and discounts on those products relevant to your DIY jobs.

The app is easy to use, especially with its easy to navigate menu:

So, how did I use it over the weekend?  Well of course I consulted the weather checker and, reassured, was excited to get outside in the spring sunshine and do a long overdue DIY job.  The Outspiration app proved to be an ideal tool to help me with my project, as I was pleased to find some specific guidance on the app that was very relevant to what I had planned:

Our poor garden gates have been on my ‘to do’ list since forever and there’s always been something else, it seemed, that needed my attention before them, but actually as the gates to our drive are the first thing a visitor sees we should really have made this more of a priority!  So testing out the app was a really good opportunity to get the work finally done and ticked off my DIY list – and I was glad to find the tips on how to tackle our rusty, flaky metalwork.

I began by scraping off the big flakes and wire-brushing the entire surface

I followed this by washing down the gates with some soapy water, giving them a little rinse and when dry I got busy with a pot of Hammerite Smooth Black Direct to Rust paint.

This was after I had painted the first one:

I can’t tell you happy seeing the gates smartened up has made me!  It has kick-started me into action and I want us to get the rest of the area looking good too, so next up we’re going to remove all the weeds from the block paving, fill some planters with flowers at the front door and also tackle a bigger job of putting up a pair of wooden gates at the side of the house, to disguise our four big bins – we’re feeling so Outspired!

So how about you?  Does this make you want to get out there too and get busy?  Why not download the Outspiration app today via the Apple Store – if you do, to celebrate the launch of the app, you can also enter a great prize draw as AkzoNobel is giving away a beautiful barbecue and a personalised hamper worth £100 to encourage you to get outdoors and begin your Outspiration journey.  Simply fill your details in the WIN section once you have downloaded the app. The competition which started on April the 28th closes on Monday the 12th of May 2014.

Post in collaboration with AkzoNobel.
