Contemporary Outdoor String Lights and Lanterns from Dotmaison

String Lighting Domaison

We’ve been loving getting outdoors in the evenings recently – it has been a real pleasure sitting on our wooden deck with a drink in hand and chatting ’til late.  With three children off school for the summer, our days are very hectic and noisy so I really value these quieter moments!

We’ve had the rattan seating, table and the outdoor rug on the deck since last year, but other accessories were a bit lacking – especially some outdoor lighting.  Luckily, Dotmaison came to the rescue with the offer of some of their popular outdoor lights to try.  If you haven’t discovered this online homeware store before, do check it out as there are some lovely brands and designs.  (If you adore Orla Kiely homeware they have a fantastic range!)

A few nights ago when it was particularly warm, I styled up the deck area and even whizzed up some chilled Strawberry Daiquiris for us to sip under the stars.  It’s not very often in the UK that we get to use our outdoor spaces like they are an extra room, so it’s great to take advantage of these mild nights while we can.  Although I do think that since we added a chiminea recently, there’s no reason we can’t enjoy the outdoor lifestyle well into autumn (as long as it’s not raining!).

So let’s take a closer look at the lighting:

Sirius Aura Lantern

Sirius Aura Lantern

This contemporary house-shaped black metal Aura lantern (which also comes in cream and pistachio), with its four glass panels, encases an LED candle which requires 3 AAA batteries.  The light flickers realistically and as the LED sits within a waxed candle, it is very authentic looking, yet much safer.  When I switched it off later in the evening , even the candle itself was completely cool to the touch.  Normally I find glass and metal lanterns can get very hot with a real candle inside, so this alternative is ideal if you have children and pets.  Although intended for indoor use, the lantern can be taken outside in fair weather, but I would put it away inside after use.  It also has a handle for carrying.

Sirius Aske lantern

Also in black metal, this lantern is tall and slim, with a crisscross design on each of its four glass sides, plus it has a glass roof.  Inside is a coil of 24 pretty LED lights.  The lantern has a carry handle and is battery operated (it takes 3 AA’s).  It also has a timer function that gives you 6 hours on and 18 hours off, which is good if you have a habit of forgetting to switch things off.  Designed for indoor and outdoor use, it provides a lovely warm-white glow to illuminate your patio beautifully.

LED Oscar Lights

I’ve been coveting some of these string lights for ages!  The gorgeous LED Oscar Lights are festoon-style indoor/outdoor lamps that have a lovely vintage feel and are perfect for creating some ambient, eye-catching outdoor lighting.

Vintage style string lights

With a romantic look, you can understand how this style of lighting has become so popular at weddings, especially those set in vintage or rustic venues – and they really do come into their own when dusk falls, so are great for outdoor parties.  I chose the opaque bulbs but you can opt for clear ones or even multi-coloured bulbs.  At £48 they are not as cheap as some other lights on the market, but they operate off the mains and the bulbs are glass and give a great light.  So much higher quality than a lot of other lights.

There are 10 bulbs on the string and you can drape them in trees, over a fence or anywhere to add some decoration and illumination.  What’s great about these is they can be extended by up to as many as 100 LED bulbs on the same transformer, offering endless possibilities.

Outdoor ambient lighting

I just adore candles and decorative lights, don’t you?  I just think they add such a lovely twinkle to any part of the house or garden.  So thank you to Dotmaison for supplying the finishing touches to our deck, we love them!
