Grand Designs Live 2014 – what to see, where to stay

Grand Designs Live 2014

It was back in October last year that I attended Grand Designs Live at the NEC in Birmingham and, having never attended a show like it before, I was taken aback by the sheer scale of it!

There was a real buzz throughout the entire (massive) venue and so much to take in; the sections and stands ran the whole gamut of house and home, both inside and out.

From renovating old houses to brand new self-builds, there was something for everyone who aspires to own a dream home and the next Grand Designs Live in London looks set to be another showstopper.  This time, it’s the tenth London show, so expect it to be bigger and better than ever.

When and where is it?

The show takes place from 3 – 11 May 2014 at ExCeL London, a contemporary exhibitions and international conventions centre in the London borough of Newham.

What can you see?

The show will feature over 500 exhibitors and seven different sections that encompass renovating and improving, home interiors, gardens and landscaping, kitchen and bathroom, food and housewares, technology, self-build and shopping.

You will be able to access all of the following under one roof:

  • Professional Design Advice
  • Latest gadgets and technology
  • Free Seminars
  • Ideas and inspiration
  • Innovative products

  Who will be there?

You never know, you may spot a celebrity or two, as I did last time…

Industry experts will be on hand to offer their professional advice, with free 30 minute slots, so you can consult them on your questions about building and developing, financing your project and managing it.  Ask an Expert consultations are available to book at the show on a first come first served basis in Grand Build on arrival.

In terms of the exhibitors you will see there, the list is huge!  So make sure you check it out before you go and mark the ones you really want to see.

What to eat?

If you’re planning a day out at the show there are plenty of refreshments available.  Why not book a Lunch Package where you can visit Grand Kitchens and experience A Taste for Design Restaurant sponsored by Miele and try out the tempting menu created by chef Nigel Smith. Enjoy up to six main course dishes and two desserts, all of which are being demonstrated by the Miele team during the day. Lunch is served from 11.45am until 3.00pm and is £20 per person when booked in advance (£25 if you book at the show).

Or how about a scrumptious Afternoon Tea package?  Available from 3.15pm there will be a selection of sandwiches and sweet treats with tea, coffee or a glass of bubbly.  Afternoon tea is served from 3.15pm until 5.00pm and is £15.95 per person.

Where to stay?

Where do you begin to look for accommodation in a city such as London?  I tend to favour trusted, familiar chains, such as the friendly comfort of a city-centre Holiday Inn.  If you want an affordable and convenient stay, with a known name, the Holiday Inn has a number of hotels in the city that could suit your needs perfectly, including Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury, Holiday Inn London Mayfair, Holiday Inn Regent’s Park or Holiday Inn London Kensington Forum.

If you are planning to attend Grand Designs Live 2014 I hope you have a fantastic time!  It looks set to be another amazing event this year.
