Julia Goodwin is the Editor of leading homes magazine, House Beautiful and she recently took some time out of her busy scheduled to answer a few of my questions about her job, home interiors and the magazine’s collaboration with Carpetright.
How did the exclusive House Beautiful/Carpetright collaboration come about?
House Beautiful is a leading international brand with a long-established reputation. By teaming up with Carpetright we’ve combined the expert knowledge, experience and success of this major retailer, with House Beautiful’s sense of style, elegance and practicality.
What’s your favourite flooring in the collection?
In the carpet range it’s the striped Residence and the flatweave Holbeck, which both featured in our November issue. They combine great quality, stylish practicality and offer a choice of a stunning statement floor or something more subtle that will look contemporary and chic. Engineered wood is also a great option because it’s a hardwearing floor that will revitalise any room, and it has the natural beauty and warmth of solid wood at an affordable price. Geometrics are a trend at the moment and our versatile Horizon rug is an easy-to-use way to add striking feature to a scheme.
Can you tell me a bit about what’s involved in a shoot for House Beautiful?
Shoots are the House Beautiful team’s chance to filter, edit and interpret the trends we spot and want to bring to the attention of our readers. We spend a lot of time creating an atmosphere, thinking about lighting and positioning and choosing accessories, down to the last detail.
What do you predict are the key up and coming trends, both in flooring and home interiors in general?
The 70s are really on-trend at the moment – gorgeous colourful prints and patterns can be added into the home subtly with beautiful burnt oranges and browns. It’s ideal for any time of the year too as it’s so warming. But also the pared-back look with light oak and quality, crafted pieces is a style that I think will endure. In our range this look is seen in the Kahrs engineered wood and laminate selections.
What’s the best thing about your job as Editor?
Being able to see all the best new ideas in homes and interiors and interpreting them for a wider audience. I also enjoy developing the House Beautiful brand through collaborations with successful high street retailers such as Carpetright.
Why do you think we are so passionate about our home interiors in the UK?
There’s a saying that ‘An Englishman’s home is his castle’, and I’m sure that’s true for Welsh, Irish and Scottish families too! To be frank, the UK used to lag behind in terms of style and affordability in interior design but that’s all changed and people have embraced that fact 100 per cent. We have an emotional connection with our homes – it’s where we create our lasting memories.
Are there plans to collaborate with Carpetright again?
It’s been a great partnership and I hope our readers and Carpetright think so too. We can’t wait to see the response.
Thanks so much to Julia for her responses, I hope you enjoyed reading!
