The UK is an old country with many old homes. It’s not uncommon for residential home buyers to look at homes with centuries of age to boast of. For that reason, they can sometimes seem out of step with newer builds, as the developmental strategy of many councils has been patchwork over the years.
Still, there’s a great amount of charm to be found in a system like that. There can also be a great amount of decisions which worked at one time, but not another. Maintenance and repairs, despite good building quality, can also be a necessity.
But despite the seeming stagnancy of some residential areas, many UK home designs are changing in interior and exterior ways. In this post, we hope to explore those we’ve been seeing more of, and suggest a few reasons why they’re on the upswing:
Basement Renovations & Development
For a long time, basements in older UK homes were barely considered part of the house. For many they were storage at best, damp and out of sight. But not all houses had them, and in fact, they were much more rare than in countries like the USA.
More recently, there’s been a slower change in how people see them. The space is already there, so if it can be dried out, reinforced, and given decent ventilation, it opens up all kinds of options. It could be a guest bedroom, a home office, a gym, or perhaps a little cinema room if the layout makes sense.
In cities where space comes at a premium, this extra square footage matters more than ever, and so it’s getting attention now in a way it just didn’t before, especially with many good basements renovation services increasing in number.
The Increased Popularity Of HVAC
There was a time not that long ago when the average UK household didn’t even think about air conditioning, as buildings were mostly developed to retain heat. But between warmer summers and the influence of global home design trends, HVAC is finding its way into more plans and more extensions too, and not just cooling either, but full systems with air filtration and better internal climate control.
This usually gets folded into a wider insulation or energy efficiency update, but still, it shows a change in mindset and the need to counterbalance heatwaves..
Landscaping & Curated Water Management Systems
Across the UK, gardens are being treated more like an extension of the house, with better planning, more structured layouts, and systems, water drainage especially, to ensure conservation. We’re also seeking more French drains, gravel soakaways, and gutters channels to help improve runoff.
That sounds technical on paper, but in practice, it’s just people not wanting their flower beds ruined after a week of heavy rain or needing to worry about flooding after storms, not to mention the conservation of water after many hosepipe bans and even the threats of drought in some areas.
With this insight, perhaps you could consider what developments your own home is suitable for.
