It’s exciting to move into a new house, but before you start unpacking all of your boxes and planning where the bed will go, there are some important steps that you need to take. A little bit of preparation can save you a lot of stress and money down the road, and whether it’s your first home or your 5th, these four tasks should be at the top of your priority list before moving day.
- Book professional inspections. Even if the property passed, a general home survey before the sale is wise to do a little bit more digging, especially if the house is older or has been empty for a while. One of the most important checks is for moisture or water damage. Hidden issues like mold, rising damp or leaks can not only cause long term problems if left untreated, but they can end up with you in a home that isn’t livable. This is why damp surveys are a smart investment before you get settled. They help to identify the areas that need your attention so you can handle them early before the carpets, furniture and family life gets in the way. You should also consider electrical safety checks, gas appliance checks, roof integrity, and the condition of your plumbing.
- Change the locks. You never know how many copies of the keys are out there, especially if the house has changed hands a few times. It’s a simple but essential job to change all of the external locks before you move into the new house. This ensures that your family’s safety is secure and you prevent any surprises happening. While you’re at it, check the window locks and set up a doorbell camera if you plan to use one. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure that everything is working properly.
- Bring in a cleaning company. It’s always easier to deep clean a house before your belongings are moved in. Even if the previous owners did a good job tidying up, you’re going to feel so much better knowing the space is freshly clean to your standards. Start with the kitchen cabinets inside and out. The bathroom tiles are in the fixtures, carpets or flooring, windows and frames, and walls and skirting boards. You should consider hiring a professional cleaning service to do a top to bottom clean if you’re short on time. This way your new home feels fresh and ready from day one.
- Get your utilities set up early. No one wants to spend their first night in the new house without electricity or running water. Make sure that you set up or transfer your utility accounts a few days before you move in, including your Internet and Wi-Fi, waste collection, any local services, and electricity and gas.
Moving into a new house is a fresh start, so always give yourself the best beginning by taking care of the little things as early as possible. A bit of planning now will make your first night, and every night after that much more enjoyable.
