How to Improve Your Flooring for a Simple Remodel

Improving your flooring can be a simple and effective way to give your home an update without breaking the bank. Also, depending on the type of flooring you select, it can also add value to your home. Did you know that hardwood floors can increase a home’s value by 2.5%?

If you’re not sure where to start, here are some tips on how to improve your flooring for a simple remodel:

1. Select the right type of flooring for your needs.

The type of flooring you select will depend on a number of factors, including your budget, lifestyle, and the look you’re going for. For example, if you have kids or pets, you may want to select a more durable option like tile or laminate. Or, if you’re looking for a more luxurious feel, hardwood or stone might be a better fit.

2. Get professional help.

If you’re not sure how to install your new flooring, it’s worth it to invest in professional help. A professional can ensure that your flooring is installed correctly and will also be able to offer advice on which type of flooring would be best for your home.

3. Make sure to prep your subfloor.

Before you install any new flooring, it’s important to properly prepare the surface below. This may involve cleaning and repairing the subfloor, as well as leveling it off. If you don’t prep the surface correctly, your new floors may not last as long or look as good as they could.

4. Add some personality with borders or accent pieces.

One of the benefits of doing a simple flooring remodel is that you can really add some personality to your space. Consider adding borders or accent pieces to your new floors for a pop of color or visual interest.

5. Don’t forget about maintenance.

Once you have your new floors installed, it’s important to keep up with regular maintenance in order to keep them looking their best. This may involve sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming on a regular basis, as well as spot cleaning when necessary.

6. Ask about warranty coverage.

When you’re selecting new flooring, be sure to ask about warranty coverage. This can give you peace of mind in knowing that your investment is protected in case anything should happen to your floors down the road.

7. Consider epoxy flooring.

If you’re looking for a durable and easy-to-clean flooring option, epoxy flooring may be a good fit for you. This type of flooring is often used in commercial settings, but it can also be a great choice for the home. Epoxy floors are stain-resistant and easy to maintain, and they can also give your space a unique look.

Things You Should Never Do to Your Hardwood Floors

You spent a lot of money on those beautiful hardwood floors, so it’s important to take care of them. Here are seven things you should never do to your hardwood floors:

1. Don’t use harsh chemicals.

Harsh chemicals can damage the finish of your hardwood floors and even penetrate the wood itself, causing long-term damage. Instead, opt for a gentle cleaner specifically designed for hardwood floors.

2. Don’t use a steam mop.

Steam mops may be great for tile or linoleum, but they aren’t meant for hardwood. The heat from the steam can actually warp or discolor the wood.

3. Don’t use a beater bar vacuum.

The beater bar on a vacuum can also damage hardwood floors. It’s best to stick to a vacuum with suction only, or invest in a special hardwood floor attachment.

4. Don’t allow water to sit on the floors.

Water is one of the biggest enemies of hardwood floors. If you spill something, be sure to clean it up right away and never allow water to just sit on the floors.

5. Don’t use furniture pads.

Furniture pads may seem like they would help protect your floors, but they can actually cause scratches. Instead, opt for furniture feet that won’t damage the floors.

6. Don’t use a wet mop.

A wet mop can also damage hardwood floors by warping or discoloring the wood. If you must mop, be sure to use a damp mop instead of a wet one.

7. Don’t forget about regular maintenance.

It’s important to sweep, vacuum, and damp mop your hardwood floors on a regular basis to keep them looking their best. You should also have them professionally cleaned and refinished every few years to extend their life.

We hope these tips help you keep your hardwood floors looking beautiful for years to come!
