It’s funny how stuff just kind of sneaks up on us, isn’t it? One minute you’re moving into a place with just a couple of boxes, and the next thing you know, every cupboard and possibly every surface is heaving with things. And at that point, it could be time to declutter and minimise so you’re a but more comfortable.
But although letting go of possessions sounds simple in theory, in reality it’s surprisingly emotional – there’s often something that makes you hesitate when you know in your heart you don’t need that thing anymore. So with that in mind, keep reading to find out more about how to let go of possessions so you can have the home you really want.
The Emotional Stuff
A lot of the time, we hang onto things because they remind us of people, places, and maybe even ourselves, and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, nostalgia can be great and very comforting. But when your home gets too full and it’s more about the past than the present, that’s when you need to do something about it and ask yourself if you really need these things.
If something holds genuine sentimental value, maybe you can display it, use it, or even just take a photo of it to keep the memory alive. If it’s something you’ve kept out of guilt (like gifts you never liked or furniture that was passed down to you), then it’s okay to let go. Remember, you’re not betraying anyone, you’re just making yourself more comfortable and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Start Small And Be Honest
Don’t feel like you’ve got to turn your entire home upside down in one weekend – just start small with one drawer or a shelf, for example. Or what about setting a timer for 20 minutes and seeing how far you can get? The goal isn’t to get it all done as quickly as possible, it’s just to make a start and then progress as slowly or as quickly as you feel comfortable with.
When you pick something up, ask yourself if it’s really adding anything to your life. And you’ve got to be totally honest with the answers otherwise you’ll never get rid of anything. And if you have to come back to some things because you just don’t know, that’s okay – it’s not a race and there isn’t a deadline.
You Don’t Have To Throw Everything Away
Letting go doesn’t always mean saying goodbye forever – sometimes it just means putting a little space between you and the item while you decide what to do with it.
One good option at this point is self storage. Whether you’re decluttering before a move, downsizing, or you’re just trying to give yourself some more space, having a safe place to store items you’re not quite ready to part with gives you more options and less pressure, so it could be an ideal path to take.
In that way, you don’t have to make any big, scary decisions – you’ve got time to think, and that can be wonderfully de-stressing in itself.
