Styling your bedroom to maximise relaxation

Sleep is a crucial aspect of staying fit and well, yet many Brits fail to clock up the recommended eight hours. A survey conducted by YouGov in February 2022 found 26% of responders admitted to getting only six hours of sleep a night. If you’re falling behind on your snooze time, your bedroom could be to blame.

Your bedroom should be a space that feels warm and relaxing, to encourage you to unwind at the end of the day. However, it can be difficult to achieve this, particularly if you’re not clued up on the finer details of interior design. From switching up the colour of your walls to investing in a good quality mattress, there are plenty of things you can do to create a more calming sleep environment.

Read on to learn the design elements that can make your bedroom feel more relaxing and help you get a better night’s sleep.

Natural elements

Think about how calm and at peace you feel when walking through a forest or swimming in the sea.  Nature is known for being a great stress reliever and helping us unwind, so try incorporating natural elements through sustainable home décor into your bedroom to encourage you to feel calm and make it easier not only to fall asleep but stay asleep.

Neutral colours

Decorate your bedroom with soft, neutral colours to reinforce the idea that the space is a place for rest and relaxation. Bold and bright colours have been linked to mental stimulation, and it’s best to avoid having too much on your mind before trying to drift off. Whites, creams, pale blues and greens are ideal for creating a calming space.

Adopt a minimalistic approach

A cluttered space isn’t going to encourage you to feel relaxed, so ensure your bedroom is tidy and free from unnecessary objects. Opt for minimalistic décor instead of filling every surface with pictures, ornaments, and personal items, to create a clear space that feels welcoming and calming.

Invest in a good quality mattress and bedding

A good mattress could be the difference between a restless night and an uninterrupted snooze. Invest in a high-quality mattress and ensure you replace it when it’s no longer comfortable. Good quality bedding will also help improve your sleep, so opt for something with natural feathers or down to ensure you stay warm during the winter and cool through the summer months.

Blackout blinds

If you often find yourself waking up as soon as the morning sun rises, consider investing in some blackout blinds to block out the light and help you stay asleep until you’re ready to rise. An eye mask could be useful instead if you’d prefer to keep costs down, but you may find it falls off while you’re sleeping.
