A home renovation can be a large, costly, and disruptive project to undertake. You want it to run smoothly, stick within your budget, and be completely stress free. However, there are some common components that are often missed by homeowners with renovation projects, which only add to the stress, time, and money of the project. This is why awareness, research, and planning are key. To help you plan for your renovation, here are some of the most commonly missed components that you need to include in your plan before you start the process.
Reusing existing materials
Many people will stretch and exceed their budget because they haven’t considered that you can reuse many of the materials within your renovation project. Not only can this significantly reduce waste and help you do your part for the environment, but it will also make the process easier, cheaper, and quicker. As long as this is considered in the beginning phases of the renovation project, it can be factored in and implemented with ease. Make sure you speak to your contractors and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Waste disposal
Too often, homeowners think about the project and the end goal, but neglect to think about all the waste and mess that is created in the process. Understandably, you may think that this will be part of the contractor’s job. In some cases, it is, but you must first check the contract you have with them and what their specific roles and responsibilities are. It could be that they include waste disposal in their costs, or it needs to be a collaborative approach. The best and most efficient way to dispose of waste during a home renovation project is with a skip hire. This is cost-effective and takes the stress out of the waste disposal process, or hiring vans, booking tip runs, and more. Skips will keep all the rubbish in one place and be taken away at the end.
Budgeting for unforeseen costs
Budgets are the backbone of your home renovation project. You need it to hire the contractors, purchase the materials, and keep everything running smoothly and on time. One thing that is commonly missed with home renovation projects is the budget for unforeseen costs and issues. You may be proud of the budget you have created to cover all of the planned and outlined costs; however, if something were to go wrong, you need to be able to cover this quickly and with ease. The last thing you want to do is put yourself in the red. Unfortunately, unforeseen issues are inevitable with home renovation projects, as there may be things you don’t know about until you start the work, for example, mold, pests, or structural issues. It may also be related to things like an increase in material costs. It is important that you always have a contingency fund for your renovation project. This might mean delaying the project start date until you can save for or acquire the relevant funds, but it will be worthwhile.
A home renovation project is complicated and stressful enough. Make sure you integrate these commonly missed components into your initial plan.
