Top Reasons Your Drains Keep Blocking

A blocked drain can happen at any time of year, but there are some blockages that are actually seasonal ones. Understanding why and how blockages are happening in and around your residence is going to help you to learn how to get rid of the smell and how to keep them clear in their entirety.

If you have a blocked drain, you need to know what kind of drain it is. You also need to know what is constantly blocking it so that you can stop it from happening in future? Of course, you might not be able to see right down into the drain So having an expert perform a CCTV drain camera survey can make a big difference. If you are dealing with repeated blockages, let’s take a look at some of the top reasons it’s happening.

  • There are three routes in the way. One of the most common reasons for a blocked drain that keeps blocking over and over is a tree root that has invaded the pipe. These routes will penetrate waste pipes if there’s any kind of a crack, because life will out. Some plumbers can argue that tree roots won’t cause or break the pipe, and they must have been broken prior to penetration, but tree roots aren’t exactly for the weak. The only way that you can fix this kind of blockage is with a jet rodding machine, so make sure that you speak to a plumber about what technique they plan to use.
  • Packing drains with fats and food. Waste disposal down drains is another good reason for it being blocked repeatedly. If you are not putting your food scraps down into the bin or putting your fat into a bottle and then disposing of it within the bottle, you’re going to find fatbergs. The solidification of fat and oils that have been rinsed down the sink.eventually when they call they create a mass in the drain and when the fat enters the sewer winter temperatures cause it to solidify this then builds up with other gunk and causes a true blockage which needs to be flushed out.
  • Wipes. If you are flushing bleach or baby wipes down the toilet, you’re going to have your toilet blocked up pretty quickly. Only pee poo and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Wipes do not biodegrade, which means unlike toilet paper, they will not break down. If you do use wipes or paper towels, bin them rather than flush them. Toilet paper disintegrates the way that it’s supposed to in water, but wipes and paper towels are designed to soak the water up and can cause huge blockages down the drain.
  • Small objects like toys. You’d be surprised at how many toys are found in drains every single year. Flushing small, solid objects down the toilet is very preventable, but it’s not the easiest thing to prevent when you have curious children who want to see what happens. If you know that your child has flushed a toy down the toilet, then you don’t need to be alarmed because it should travel through the drains without any harm. However, not every toy can travel down the drains effectively or efficiently. If the bowl fills up after a flush and you notice that the fixtures won’t drain any water, that means that the toy that your kid has flushed down it is going to cause drama.
  • A build up of hair. Shower blockages are common and usually these are caused by hair. Accumulation of hair that is mixed with conditioner, shampoo and has mattered to form a Patty can block the drains up.
  • Soap. Did you know that a slurry of soap can build up in the same way that fat can? It can create a sludge at the bottom of the drain, and when that mixes with hair and other human waste, this can cause a blockage to the fixtures. A simple remedy of bicarb, soda and vinegar is a great way to clear off this kind of blockage because it effectively dissolves the soap. Jet Rodding machines can also give the drains A thorough clean as well.

  • Grout. Concrete or tiler’s grout blockages are very common, especially for new build bathrooms. It’s not an easy blockage to remove however, so you can’t try this one on your own. There’s no need to waste lots of money on drain cleaners that are not going to be effective. The best way that you can prevent this is to make sure that you are capping waste outlets when the tilers come to grout the shower tray. This will stop the grout being disposed of down the waste. Make sure that you speak to a plumber about which drain cleaning projects that you should use, because they will know which ones should be put down the drain and will be affected with tiler’s grout.
  • The back wall of drain pipes. Did you know that ground movement or even poor installation of your drains can be the cause of a blockage? If the pipes are not laid effectively in the 1st place, they can kink and they can be blocked over repeatedly. Drain cameras are the best option here to identify where the drains have any backfill or has a belly.plumbers will then be able to quote on the cost to replace this section of the pipe and while it can be costly you might find it’s more effective to pay for this kind of fix rather than constantly paying for somebody to come out and fix it for you.
  • Sanitary products. In the same vein as wipes and Paper towels, sanitary products should not be flushed. Tampons and pads should always be disposed of in the bin provided and never flushed down a toilet. Because these items can’t disintegrate effectively in water. You’ll find that they can wrap themselves around other solids in the sewers and drains, which causes major blockages that have to be undone by hand. Always provide a bin in the toilets for things like this, because you don’t want your drones to be blocked up as a result.
