How to Improve Home Water Quality

Clean water is essential to everyday life, yet there are many homeowners who overlook the quality of water that is flowing to and from their taps every day. Whether you get water from the city or you have a private well, contaminants can be very much present in your water and you have to learn how to identify and eliminate them.

This is important for your health and that of your family as well. Here are some practical steps you can take to make sure that the water that you use everyday is safe and healthy.

Start with Water Testing

The first and most important step when it comes to improving your water quality is understanding what is in it. This is where testing comes into play. A professional test is going to identify impurities in your water such as lead nitrate, hardness or bacterial contaminants.

Knowing what you are dealing with allows you to choose the right filtration or treatment method for your water. Without water testing you could end up spending money on filters or even softeners that don’t address the actual issue that you’re having with your water supply. You should test your water at least once per year especially if you rely on well water and have noticed changes in color and odor as well as taste.

Install the Right Filtration System

Once you have a clear idea of what is in your water then it’s time to go ahead and add a suitable filtration system. There are various types of systems available to meet different kinds of needs.

For example, there are activated carbon filters that can remove chlorine and improve the taste of your water. Reverse osmosis systems are sold if you want to remove a wide range of contaminants. These may include heavy metals as well as lead.

If you’re dealing with hard water, a softener may be the best solution for your home. For whole house protection you should consider a point of entry system that filters water as soon as it enters your home. The bottom line is that the right system can improve both the quality and usability of the water that you have.

Maintain Plumbing and Fixtures

Old or corroded plumbing will contribute to poor water quality in your home. This is especially true if the pipes are made from lead or galvanized steel. If you have an older home you can get the plumbing inspected and updated if it is necessary.

Additionally, regularly cleaning shower heads and aerators which can collect mineral deposits and bacteria as time goes on is going to keep your plumbing in good condition and support clean water delivery everywhere in your home. This should prevent buildup that could compromise water significantly.

Keep Your Water Source Safe

If you use a private well, you should make sure you are protecting the water source itself. This is key. Always ensure that your well head is properly sealed and the surrounding areas are clear of contaminants which includes fertilizers, animal waste and pesticides. You should regularly inspect your well and do professional maintenance to catch issues as early as possible.
