How to Stay Active While Travelling

If you want to safeguard your health in the long term, then maintaining a certain level of activity is essential. For some, this might mean keeping up the habit even while on holiday. In some cases, in fact, a specific kind of exercise might even form the basis of an overseas adventure.

There’s one kind of exercise that’s especially suitable for holidays, and that’s cycling. But exactly what is so appealing about a cycling holiday?

Cycling as the Ultimate Holiday Fitness Activity

Let’s run through the advantages of this form of holiday. For one thing, cycling is a great workout. It will improve muscle condition, burn through fat, and safeguard the health of your heart and lungs. It’s also easily integrated into a tour of a given region, especially if you’re visiting a part of the world where the cycling infrastructure is well-established.

Selecting the Best Cycling Destinations for Fitness Travel

Other than the quality of the cycling trails, you might also think about the natural features of the places you’re visiting. You might look for an inspiring view across a beautiful valley, or across the sea. The climate might also be a factor. It’s not much fun cycling in freezing cold, drizzly weather – but at the same time, cycling in extremely high temperatures might be unpleasant, too.
In certain cases, cycling might be a great way to get around during a city break. In cities like Amsterdam, where there’s a thriving cycling culture, it might be well worth doing.

Cycling Holidays in Spain: A Popular Fitness Destination

For many, Spain is a prime location for cycling, as it offers many of the features we’ve touched upon, and a few more besides. A trip along the Costa Brava, for example, might allow you to take in the sea views, and enjoy the rugged, mountainous terrain. Mallorca provides a slightly different experience, especially if you venture to the mountainous centre. Whatever experience you’re looking for, the chances are that you’ll find it on a cycling holiday in Spain.

Cycling Gear and Fitness Tips for Travellers

Getting the best from your cycling adventure typically means getting your packing right. You’ll need the bicycle itself, which can either be bought and transported or rented at your destination. Take more water than you think you might need, in separate bottles in case one of them leaks. Bear in mind that more water will be required if you’re cycling in hot weather. Make sure that you have emergency contacts to call upon if you run into trouble, and that you let someone know where you’re cycling, especially if you’re going on a path that’s not cycled regularly.

Finally, think about taking breaks throughout your tour. This will give you a chance to see the sights, rest your legs, and recuperate ahead of the next leg.
