Why I’m looking forward to visiting York this year

Post in collaboration with Hotels.com, but all views are my own.

I love a little city break, don’t you? With travel being put on hold over the past year, I’ve thought about these getaways quite a lot, looking back with fond memories on past trips. Early last year we managed to get away to Edinburgh for a mini-break which was my first trip to Scotland. I absolutely loved it, in fact you can have a read about it here.

This year, I had booked a weekend away for my sons and I to York and when it became apparent we wouldn’t be able to go because of the travel restrictions, we had to cancel our train tickets and hotel reservation and put it on the back burner. However I am feeling optimistic that a little city break in the UK will be much more possible soon. The prospect of travel looks likely to be during stage 3 (no earlier than 31st May 2021) as part of the government’s roadmap to easing restrictions.

Things to do in York

You can pack a lot of activities into a weekend in York. Eating out has been missed, so I will be looking forward to going out for a big breakfast – it’s the best meal of the day, after all! Betty’s cafe is famed for its afternoon tea, but they do breakfast too! I’d love to check out this place having never visited before.

We will gaze upon the beautiful gothic architecture of York Minster and I know my boys will enjoy a walk along the wonderfully preserved medieval city walls. We’ll amble down the Shambles, which will feel a bit like being on set in a Harry Potter Movie! I am sure they will enjoy a visit to the Jorvik centre to find out about the Vikings and will probably also want to visit the York Dungeon too for a bit of historical gore.

Shopping in actual shops will be high on my agenda, a good old browse with a break for coffee and cake sounds like my perfect afternoon. In the evening I guess it will involve more eating and we may catch a movie – my youngest son has been disappointed about James Bond being delayed, so perhaps we’ll be able to watch that one in the cinema finally.

I feel there is so much to look forward to in the future and hopefully it is not too far away now!
