10 Tips for Laying the Perfect Patio for Your Garden

Although we’re currently in winter, the spring and summer months will soon be upon us, meaning that many homeowners will be trying to make the most of the sunshine in their gardens. If you love nothing more than to sit out and soak up the rays, sorting out your back garden before temperatures begin to rise back up is important.

There are lots of benefits that come with having a patio installed in your garden. Not only can it increase the value of your property; it can extend your living area too. Here are 10 top tips for laying the perfect patio for your garden.

Create a Detailed Plan

Before you get to work, it’s important that you make a blueprint on graph paper so you can be certain about where the patio should be placed. There are often major features that need to be taken into account, such as if you have a shed, a pond, or any trees nearby.

Know What Lies Beneath

Make sure that you’re aware of any objects in the ground before deciding on the location for your patio. If you have large tree roots, these can threaten your patio, and the patio itself may cause damage to tree roots.

Keep it Close to Your Kitchen

Many homeowners use their patios for a place to relax, host a barbeque, or to entertain. When deciding on the location, it’s best to place your patio near to the kitchen which will make serving food and cleaning up much easier and quicker.

Consider Surrounding Aesthetics

Whatever type of patio you choose for your garden, it’s crucial that it ties in well with the aesthetics of the main property, as well as any outbuildings that you have. You will want your garden to stand out for all the right reasons, so make sure that the overall look matches and complements your home.

Think About Size

Determining what the patio will be used for will help when it comes to establishing the size of patio you want. If you are likely to only use it for occasional purposes, then choosing a modest sized patio may be the best option for you. If you like to entertain, or have a large family, a large patio may be more suitable.

Add a Walkway

If you are considering adding a walkway to your patio, it’s important that it’s at least two feet wide, meaning a person can walk down it with ease. If you would like your walkway to accommodate two people at a time, simply make it double the width. For any guests who are in a wheelchair, it’s best to pick a three-foot-wide walkway.

Consider a Patio Awning

Patio awnings can be a great way to enjoy your outdoor entertainment area whilst staying protected from the hot summer sun. You can have a patio awning custom made from a company like Nationwide, where all their awnings provide a high level of UV protection. No matter whether your patio area is large or small, they will be able to install an awning that suits your requirements. Keep the Site Safe

When laying down a patio, it’s important that your health and safety is not compromised. Keeping the worksite safe and secure for both you and your family should be your first port of call. Also, make sure there are no loose items lying around as this could cause somebody to slip, trip, or fall. If you hire professionals to carry out the work, make sure that they are wearing the correct clothing and using safe equipment.

Know Building Codes

Before you begin transforming your back garden, you need to be aware of building codes or housing association rules. The last thing you want to do is shell out a ton of money on a patio to find that your project isn’t allowed. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so make sure that you look into garden construction rules and regulations first.

Pick Suitable Plants and Flowers

To elevate the visual appeal of your patio area, picking the right plants and flowers can make all the difference. No matter the size of your back garden or patio space, picking flora that complements your chosen pavers will transform the overall aesthetic of your garden.

Creating a patio garden that stands out from the crowd can be a real talking point amongst guests and add value to your home. If it’s time to give your garden a makeover, make sure that you take all the suggestions listed on board to help you create a patio that’s eye catching, appealing, and fits with the overall look and feel of your property. Remember, health and safety come first, so if you would prefer not to go down the DIY route, it’s best to hire a professional who can transform your garden for the better.
