Stamped Concrete Vs Pavers Showdown

Having trouble choosing whether to have stamped concrete or pavers installed? It’s important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each to know which one will pack a punch. Depending on your preference, each one has qualities that make it a worthy choice. Read on to determine which one to place your bet on.

The Contender: Stamped Concrete

You’ve probably been fooled by a stamped concrete pool or driveway at first glance thinking these were pavers. We don’t blame you. Not when it was made to resemble slate, brick, flagstone, tile or even wood. It’s done by pouring the concrete mix and then embossing it with textured patterns

Strengths:

  • Allows plenty of room for customization.
  • Intricate details and ornate designs can be achieved.
  • Comes with a staggering array of colors, textures, and patterns.
  • Colors can be hand-blended on site because of its mobility.
  • Costs relatively less than pavers.

Weaknesses:

  • Prone to cracking through freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Vulnerable to earthquakes and foundation issues.
  • Difficult to find an exact color match when patching damages because the color is prone to fading.
  • Requires sealing at least once a year.
  • Interruptions across stamped pattern lines are
  • noticeable.

The Verdict: If you’re prioritizing aesthetic appeal, stamped concrete is the clear winner.

The Contender: Pavers

Pavers have been around for hundreds of years. Those that date back centuries ago are usually seen in old European villages and Spanish courtyards. Paving stones are installed in an interlocking pattern as an exterior flooring.

Strengths:

  • Requires minimal maintenance and offers better cost efficiency.
  • Repairs can be done quickly and seamlessly by replacing cracked or broken paving stones.
  • Time-tested durability.
  • To achieve stunning designs, colored paving stones can be mixed and matched.
  • Lasts longer than stamped concrete.

Weaknesses:

  • Requires binding polymers to keep weeds from sprouting.
  • Prone to settling and moving as the soil shifts.
  • Does not allow as much room for customization as stamped concrete.
  • Intricate designs are difficult to achieve with a limited selection of styles.
  • Costs more than stamped concrete.

The Verdict: For those who prioritize durability, pavers are sure to deliver knockout results.
