The Ultimate Guide to Classy Drinking Crystalware

Crystalware can play an important role in the home when setting the tone for any dining experience. From casual family meals to elegant dinner parties, the right crystalware will enhance the look and feel of your table setting. It can even optimise the aromas and flavours of any drink you want to serve. The best news is that the right crystalware is a great investment never goes out of fashion and will last you for many years to come.

In this ultimate guide, we will look at the classy crystalware that you should keep in mind when stocking up your home (focusing on the realm of wine glasses!)

The importance of quality crystalware

There are several reasons why good crystalware can be a great investment:

  •   Aesthetic appeal – It adds sophistication and elegance to your table, enhancing the visual appeal of the dining experience. It may even serve as a conversation starter.
  •   Enhancing flavours – Different shapes and sizes of crystalware can affect the taste and aroma of their contents. Crystalware is designed to enhance the drinking experience, in particular, concentrating aromas and directing liquids to different parts of the palate.
  •   Functionality – Different beverages require different designs of crystalware to ensure you get the best experience.

Types of crystalware

Drinking crystalware comes in a range of different shapes and sizes, and this can often be confusing. However, each type has a special purpose:

  •   Red wine glasses – These types of glasses usually have a larger bowl so the wine can breathe. This can be further broken down into Burgundy glasses (shorter and wider) and Bordeaux glasses (broad bowl and taller)
  •   White wine glasses – White wine glasses are typically smaller, with a narrow bowl to help keep wine cooler.
  •   Rosé wine glasses – There is usually a slight flare to the rim which enhances the flavour of the wine. These are generally a similar size to white wine glasses but with a slightly larger bowl.
  •   Champagne or sparkling wine – Champagne flutes are tall to help maintain the fizz. Coupes have a wide shallow bowl and were popular historically. They have a vintage charm too, which is helping them make a comeback.
  •   Beer glasses – Pilsner glasses are tall and slender, pint glasses have a slight bulge near the top, Weizen glasses are tall with wider top and narrow base and mainly used for wheat beers.
  •   Cocktail glasses – These come in a range of sizes. Martini have a long stem and conical bowl, rocks or old-fashioned glasses are short and sturdy and highballs are taller to allow for mixed drinks.

Choosing the right crystalware

The crystalware that you need will depend on the occasions you’ll be using it for. A more casual household may only need a couple of different types of crystalware, whereas a formal hosting place will require a wider range. Think about the different beverages that you might be serving – this will help you to determine the types of crystalware to have at hand.

One final thing to consider is the design and style. There are some contemporary designs out there that the aesthetics of specific homes. However, there is something to be said for more traditional styles which never really go out of fashion.

Having a diverse range of crystalware will ensure that you have all the bases covered. However, building a collection may take some time. With this in mind it is a good idea to start your collection with some of the basics, for example, water glasses, and those for red and white wine. Add to your collection over time and end up with a fantastic collection.
