Ultra-Common Home Problems (And Why You Don’t Have To Put Up With Them)

Most of the time, our homes work fine. But every now and again, they let us down. And when they do, it can be super annoying.

Fortunately, you can fix most problems yourself. Here’s our list of irritating home issues and how to remedy them.

Leaking Tap

Is there anything more annoying in the world than a leaking tap? The drip, drip, drip of the water is enough to drive you mad.

Generally, it’s an easy fix. First, turn off the water at the mains and then remove the tap from the sink. You’ll notice that there are various washers inside, designed to prevent water from leaking out. However, these can fatigue over time, leading to breaches.

To fix this, just take out the old washer and replace it with a new one from the manufacturer.

Leaky Toilets

It’s a similar story with leaky toilets. The constant sound of flushing can keep you up at night.

Usually, the problem here is either an issue with the rubber flapper or the chain.

To check where the problem is coming from, pour a few drops of food colouring into the tank. If you notice the bowl water changing colour, you have a problem with your flapper. If no discoloration happens, it’s the chain. Replace either component depending on your results.

A Busted Dryer

Dryers have the annoying habit of failing right when you need them the most, usually in the middle of winter or after you’ve gotten soaked in the rain. There’s nothing more annoying than knowing that you’re going to have to wheel out all the racks, which you often don’t have enough space for anyway.

The fix here is to stock a bunch of dryer replacement parts available from this website. These eliminate the need to wait weeks at a time for new parts to arrive or pay for expensive handyman callouts.

Squeaky Doors

Do you hear little squeaking mouse-like sounds every time you open the doors in your home? If so, you’re not alone. It’s a common ailment – something that affects millions of people all over the world.

What can you do about it? Well, quite a bit actually. The best thing to do is spray them with a little bit of WD-40. This stuff penetrates the metal rapidly.

Another option is to swing the door back and forth a few times and see whether that sorts the problem out. It might do, but not always.

Low Water Pressure

If you have a low water pressure issue, ask your neighbours if they do too. If it’s a streetwide problem, you’ll need to complain to the local water company. However, if their pressure is okay but yours is not, it’s often a sign that your pipes are clogged with lime.

Fortunately, you can fix this problem by replacing your plumbing. Find the offending section and swap it out for another one. If you’re not confident doing that, get a plumber to do it for you. It’s not a particularly expensive job.
