Upgrading Your Exterior Walls: 5 Tips

Photo: Antonia Ludden

Upgrading your exterior walls can be a lot of fun and make a significant difference in how your property appears. All of a sudden it actually feels like a new home, changing how you perceive it on a fundamental level.

But what exactly should you be doing? How can you upgrade your home in the right way so that it feels good?

Inspect For Damage

You’ll want to start the process by inspecting for damage. If there’s a problem with the wall itself, you need to fix that first.

You could also look at the state of the insulation. If this is in poor condition, it can make your home feel cold and uninviting, which is something you’;ll want to avoid whenever you can.

Choose The Right Materials

The next step is to figure out what materials you’re going to use to upgrade your walls. You’ll want to keep most of the original brickwork, but perhaps cover it with something else that you find more attractive.

For example, you might opt for vinyl. This option is cheap and available in numerous colors and sizes, making it one of the most attractive options. It’s also weather-resistant and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, which is why many modern homeowners now use it.

You could also go to Multiplastering for rendering. These finishes look great in traditional settings or where you want to add character to a building.

Finally, some modern aesthetics use metal. It’s often durable and low maintenance, especially if you choose a type of metal that is less likely to corrode.

Improve Your Insulation

Another way to upgrade your walls is to consider the insulation in more detail. You may find that adding extra insulation improves the performance of your home and leaves it feeling cozy and warm.

One way to do this is to spend some time sealing various gaps. Experts are actually quite good at finding these, preventing air from flowing in and out at will.

You might also want to use spray foam inside the walls. This material expands over time, filling every crevice so you don’t have to manually plug them yourself.

If you want to use exterior boards, you can do that, too. These look great and can boost energy efficiency considerably, especially in older homes.

Enhance Your Weatherproofing

Another thing you might want to try is to enhance your weatherproofing. Installing a weather barrier can be an excellent way to prevent issues like rising damp, which are the scourge of many homes.

Ventilation should also be a consideration, especially in bathrooms, kitchens, and attics. These spaces can attract condensation, so ventilating them is essential.

Check The Aesthetics

Finally, you’ll want to check the aesthetics of the exterior walls. Upgrading these can make you feel like you’re moving into a brand new home and they enhance curb appeal.

Starting with the color and texture is one option. Texturing can add depth. You might also want to add decorative panels or event mounting points of hanging baskets.
