Doing it yourself is a great way to save money while ensuring that your home always looks great, and is free from problems like cracks and falling shelves, that can be annoying, if not downright dangerous. But, in order to be a decent DIY-er, not only do you need the skills, you also need the right equipment. Now, we may not be able to help you with the former (you’ll need to learn your DIY skills yourself) but we can definitely help you with the latter…
- A Good Set of Power Tools
If you’re still borrowing your dad’s ancient drill that sounds like it’s about to take off, it’s time to level up. Enter Makita power tools—the gold standard for anyone serious about their DIY game. Whether you’re drilling holes, sanding surfaces, or pretending you’re on a home makeover show, Makita’s got your back.
Not only are they reliable, but they’ll also make you look like you know what you’re doing, which is half the battle anyway. Bonus: they come in those nifty blue cases that scream, “I know my way around a toolbox.”
- The Almighty Spirit Level
The humble spirit level if youe key to straight shelves and non-wonky picture frames. Sure, you could eyeball it, but do you really want to hear your partner say, “It’s a bit crooked, isn’t it?” every time they walk into the room? Didn’t think so.
Get yourself a decent spirit level. They’re cheap, effective, and save you from the shame of unintentional abstract furniture.
- A Trusty Hammer
No DIY kit is complete without a hammer. It’s the all-rounder of tools: you can drive nails, pull nails out, tap things into place, and occasionally wave it around for dramatic effect when things aren’t going your way. Pro tip: invest in one with a comfortable grip unless you want to develop an early case of DIY-related arthritis.
- Tape Measure
“I think it’s about this long,” is not a sentence you want to utter when cutting wood or measuring a space for your new bookcase. A good tape measure is your best friend in the DIY world. Get one that locks in place and has both metric and imperial measurements—because you never know when you’ll need to decipher instructions written by someone who still uses inches.
- Sandpaper
Thinking of skipping sanding? Think again. Sandpaper is the unsung hero of a smooth finish, whether you’re refinishing a table, fixing dodgy skirting boards, or smoothing out the results of an overenthusiastic jigsaw session. Keep a variety of grits handy—because sometimes you need to go rough, and sometimes you need to finesse it.
- WD-40
Is it a lubricant? A squeak-stopper? A rust remover? Yes, yes, and yes. WD-40 is like duct tape’s liquid cousin, and if you don’t have a can in your DIY arsenal, are you even DIY-ing? It’s the solution to problems you didn’t know you had, from stuck bolts to sticky drawers.
- Safety Gear
DIY is fun until you end up in A&E explaining how you managed to nail your own hand to the coffee table. Invest in some basic safety gear: goggles, gloves, and a dust mask at the very least. It’s not just about avoiding injuries; it’s about being able to look smug when you’re the only one still breathing comfortably after sanding an entire wall.
- A Roll of Duct Tape
If WD-40 can’t fix it, duct tape probably can. From patching holes to holding things together until you figure out a permanent solution, duct tape is the hero of last-minute fixes. Plus, it’s a badge of honour for any true DIY-er.
Time to DIY!
