New windows can be a big investment. But there are times when a window replacement is overdue. Below are a few signs that it’s time to get rid of those old windows.
The glass is broken
This is the most obvious time when you should replace windows. A broken window pane can be a security threat and can also let in water, cold air and pests. It’s worth looking for an emergency glazier immediately after a window breaks to prevent any further problems.
The frame is warped/rotten
Visible damage to the frame can be just as bad as damage to the glass. Timber windows are particularly susceptible to wear and tear if they are not looked after. Once the timber starts to warp or rot, you should consider getting new windows fitted.
There are drafts/leaks
Can you feel cold air coming through your window even when it is shut? Are your windows making a whistling noise? Drafts are a sign that your windows are damaged. It could be important to replace your windows to prevent air getting in – especially in winter when it gets very cold. If water is leaking into your home when the windows are closed, this is also a sign you should replace your windows in order to prevent mould and water damage.
There’s condensation between the panes
If you’ve got double-glazed windows, look out for condensation forming between the panes. This is a sign of a failed seal and it means that your double glazing is no longer providing adequate insulation. Such an issue may be possible to fix without replacing your window, but often a replacement is easier.
They don’t open/close properly
Can’t open your windows? Or perhaps they won’t close properly? There are many possible reasons a window may no longer open or close properly. It could be a simple case of cleaning debris and dirt from the tracks. Alternatively, the hinges or latch may be damaged. Or the frame itself may be damaged. In the latter case, a replacement is usually necessary.
They’re not energy-efficient
A surprising number of homes in the UK still have single-glazed windows. These windows let out heat quickly, so that you’re having to turn up the thermostat more regularly in winter. Switching to double-glazed windows is a good investment that can reduce your energy consumption by keeping your home warm longer and boost the value of your home. Double-glazing could also have other advantages such as making windows more secure.
They don’t match the style of your home
Windows might be worth replacing if they don’t fit the style of your home. Materials like uPVC can be affordable window options on modern homes, but may look out of place on a period building. Similarly, if you’ve got all aluminium windows, but one is made of wood, you may feel that it’s worth replacing the wooden window with an aluminium one to maintain a sense of consistency. Take your time to compare styles of windows and find one that you think will suit your property.
