Where to Begin Learning to Drive

Being able to drive is a hugely valuable life skill that can improve many areas of your life and provide an immense sense of freedom and independence. Learning to drive can also be daunting, but you should know that it gets easier with time, and it is never too late to learn. This post will offer advice on taking the first few steps so that you can navigate this challenge with confidence.

Where to Begin

So, you have decided that you want to learn how to drive, but where do you begin? The very first step to take will be to apply for a provisional license, which is essential for learning. You should also familiarise yourself with the Highway Code for your theory test so that you give yourself enough time.

You should know that it takes the average learner 45 hours of driving lessons to pass the driving test, and the average cost is around £20 per hour, so you need to consider the financial side of learning to drive (try to see it as an investment in yourself).

Consider Your Options

At this stage, you can start considering your options. First, you should decide to learn either a manual or automatic car. Learning in a manual can be beneficial in that you will be able to drive all cars and have a greater understanding of how the vehicle works, but keep in mind that automatic transmission is becoming more common with the rise of electric cars. Learning to drive an automatic can be easier and less stressful, but you will only be allowed to drive automatic vehicles.

You should also consider buying your own car to learn in or borrowing a car for practice. Being able to practice in between lessons is invaluable for developing your abilities and confidence and could reduce the number of lessons you have to pay for. If you need to practice in a friend or family member’s car, make sure that you have temporary learner insurance for coverage.

Choosing a Driving Instructor

There is no decision greater than choosing a driving instructor. You should take your time to research instructors in your area online as well as ask around for recommendations. You want to make sure that you feel confident and comfortable with the instructor, so do not feel that you have to stick with one as switching may be beneficial.

Hopefully, the information in this post will be helpful for anyone wanting to learn how to drive. It can be incredibly daunting to take the initial first steps, but once you have a few lessons under your belt, you are sure to feel confident and start to develop your abilities. Being able to drive can open up the world and provide a great sense of freedom, and it is never too late to learn!
