Most people live in one country their entire life. Others feel the need to spread their wings and experience life in another country. Moving abroad is of course a big decision that can involve many sacrifices. Not everyone can do it or is ready to make the move. To make sure emigrating is the right choice, here are 5 signs to look out for.
You yearn for more than travel
Travelling to a certain country may help satisfy some of your desires. But eventually you may find yourself wanting more. Living in another country – even for a few months – could allow you to explore the culture more deeply and give you a fresh perspective on life. Once you start planning longer trips and keep fantasising about going back to a certain country, you know you’re ready to live there.
There are better opportunities abroad
It’s important that the opportunities you need are better abroad. Perhaps there are certain careers that are easier to get into in other countries. Or perhaps there are certain interests like skiing or diving that are easier to immerse yourself in abroad. Perhaps the pay is better for what you are already doing, or maybe you have a better chance of buying a home. All in all, you need to make sure that the opportunities are better and not significantly worse.
You have no commitments holding you back
While you may have to leave behind family or friends, it could be much harder to leave behind a partner or kids for long periods. They either need to be prepared to come with or you need to be able to come back often enough to maintain your relationship. You also need to consider financial ties like debts you may need to pay off or rental agreements that you may need to continue paying for a certain period of time.
You can afford to move abroad
Moving abroad can cost a lot of money. First you need to consider the cost of a visa and the flight. Then you need to consider the cost of shipping over your belongings. It’s best to use a moving company that specialises in international moves such as Deliver1 for the most efficient and affordable service. Compare quotes and make sure you have enough money set aside to cover the cost of moving.
The culture and language doesn’t scare you
Living in a new country could mean having to adjust to a new culture and language. Knowing some of the lingo before you go could make it easier to get by and could even be an entry requirement in some countries. Consider downloading some apps (such as these ones listed at WIRED)and taking some lessons to build up your knowledge. When it comes to the culture, make sure that you are comfortable with all the laws and customs. Travelling to certain countries could involve giving up certain freedoms (like drinking alcohol in Saudi Arabia) or embracing certain behaviours in order to be accepted (like always being punctual and voluntarily working overtime in Japan). Be prepared to make these lifestyle changes.
