4 Ways to Winter Proof Your Home in 2020

Having a home to maintain can be a lot of fun when you get to experiment with design and features throughout the year. This season it is dull and grey outside, so it’s really nice to be able to make the inside of your home a warm and cosy haven that you never want to leave. However it’s also important to address the outside of your home so that you don’t have to worry about things in the future:

Clear your Gutters and Drains

This might be the last thing on your ‘to-do’ list, which is why it hits the top spot on ours. Admittedly, not the most enjoyable or glamorous job (wet leaves, moss… bugs? Nope!) but arguably one of the most important. Exterior pipe blockages can cause some serious damage to your home. The weight of drains and gutters filled with leaves and general natural debris can pull the pipes away from your house, causing nasty damp and mould problems that can affect the walls from the inside out.

For this reason, you should always address damp spots immediately in your home to prevent further, more expensive issues in the future. Working to stop this from happening is worth a few minutes of gross.

Get Your Heating in Check

Feeling the warm air kiss your face as you enter the house after being out in the cold, is the definition of bliss. But what if you unlock your front door and you can still see your breath in the hallway? The sound of the heater whirring and clunking, then turning to radio silence is a disaster. Get your boiler checked before the big winter freeze sets in so you’re not left in the cold when you want to be cosy at home.

Most boilers come with a guarantee, so always make sure to have it  handy so you’re not caught short- it also helps you to avoid expensive plumber and electrician call-out fees if the worst should happen.

Clear your Pathways

With a good first impression, people feel welcomed to your home even before knocking on the door. As host, your job is to ensure any visitors stay safe; from the postie to your grandparents. If they slip and fall on your land there could be fallout (or expensive insurance claims). Why not sprinkle your path with that store cupboard staple, salt. One tablespoon can help alleviate frosty footpaths for up to one square metre.

This is a quick and easy solution to prevent some very serious consequences from happening!

Blankets and Pillow Forts

Memories of childhood winters come flooding back; hot chocolate and marshmallow mountains, animated Disney films, blankets and pillows. It might be sipping tea (or a glass of wine…we won’t tell!) and binge-watching your favourite season nowadays, but a pile of fluffy blankets and cute cushions can create a lovely homely feel to lift the dark doom and gloom of winter. Don’t be left in the cold this winter. Check all of these things so you can truly relax and make the most of the season.
