5 Renovation Mistakes 99% Of People Make

When it comes to renovating your home, you usually have big plans. You want to turn it into somewhere that serves you more.

But the actual process of renovation is challenging. Most people attempting it for the first time make mistakes that derail their efforts and prevent them from achieving the outcomes they want.

That’s where this post can help. We explore the renovation mistakes made by 99% of people and how you can avoid them. Here’s what you need to know:

Using Low-Quality Materials

Our first cautionary tale is the use of low-quality materials. Many people opt for these, believing they can mask them with DIY, decorations, or behind focal points. But, as you might guess, that rarely happens.

For this reason, we always suggest buying the best materials you can afford. They will last longer and look better after, say, five years. If you don’t do that, you’re at risk of all the usual problems, like peeling, cracking, and rusting.

Underestimating Demolition Work

Another mistake most renovators make is underestimating demolition work. It seems like it should be simple to rip out old units and fittings, but that’s rarely the case. Problems like mold, wiring, and structural issues often get in the way.

For this reason, you’ll want to plan a buffer period to deal with these problems. Adding extra time to your schedule makes it much more straightforward to deal with these issues while avoiding getting off track.

Failing To Consider Storage

Another problem you often see is the failure to consider storage. Many people living in apartments or smaller homes often wind up simply leaving stuff outside, putting them at risk of fines, penalties, and weather damage.

That’s why having storage units available is essential. These provide a backup during renovations, allowing you to keep furniture and other items out of the way during the middle of the work. It certainly beats using neighbors’ garages.

DIYing Beyond Skill Level

You also want to avoid the mistake of trying to DIY beyond your skill level. Trying to do things yourself can seem like a way of saving money, but it is often a false economy.

For this reason, be honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do. Sometimes you can fit a light, but other times, you need a professional with the necessary skills. Don’t attempt anything dangerous involving gas, water, or electricity unless you have formal training or it’s your job. That’s generally a bad idea.

Ignoring Your Timeline

Many renovators also make the mistake of ignoring their timeline. You’d be amazed by just how long some renovations can take unless you have a team of people with you and all the materials ready to go.

Be realistic about how long the work will take, ask the experts, and look at previous projects. Think about how long it will take materials to arrive from vendors and the sequence of working with contractors.

So there you have it: some of the reasons most renovators make mistakes, and how to avoid them.
