5 Ways to Make Your Family Home Tidier (& Keep it That Way)

Everyone wants their home to be as clean and tidy as possible. That doesn’t mean it’ll always be that way. Anyone with a growing family knows how difficult it can be. Kids constantly make a mess, and you can often be too busy to clean up constantly.

As much as you want to make your family home tidier, it can feel overwhelming. It doesn’t have to, though.

Instead, it might just be a matter of taking the right steps towards keeping a clean, tidy home – and not as difficult as you’d think. While you’ll have to put a bit of effort into it at the start, it gets easier and easier as time goes on.

It’s worth diving into the ways you can make your family home tidier, with a few particular strategies which you can find below:

Make Your Family Home Tidier By Decluttering: Tips to Try

One of the best ways to make your family home tidier without a lot of effort is to spend some time decluttering. It helps you get rid of any visual clutter that doesn’t serve a purpose. Decluttering surplus ‘things’ makes trying to keep your family home tidy a lot easier.

It’s more than worth putting the time and effort into it. When you do, make sure you are using a few tips and tricks. The more useful of these are:

  1. Donate clothes you never wear to cut down on wardrobe clutter.
  2. Spend just ten minutes a day decluttering to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Figure out what you don’t actually use or want, and get rid of it.
  4. Take an objective approach to make sure you declutter properly, drawer by drawer, room by room.

After you’ve decluttered, it’s just a matter of knowing how to keep your family home tidy. This is where many parents struggle, and a mess can just build up.

It doesn’t need to be that way, though. You’ve taken an important step by decluttering first. Now  you just have to follow these five steps to make more of an impact and keep on top of things:

Ways to Keep Your Family Home Tidy: 5 Steps to Take

1. Teach Your Kids to Clean

As your kids get older, they’ll be better able to clean up after themselves. It’s worth taking the time to teach them to do a few particular cleaning-related chores. This could help you more than you’d think.

While your kids mightn’t be able to do some of the larger tasks, it’s more than worth teaching them some of the more minor ones. This could be folding washing and pairing socks. That way, they can help you with the housework quite a bit. You’ll end up saving yourself a lot of time and effort as time goes on.

2. Have a Space for Everything

One of the main reasons a family home feels messy is because belongings are just left anywhere and everywhere. It’s worth avoiding that as much as you can. Have a space for everything, and make sure everything’s in its space. Do this for all of the belongings that could create a mess.

A bike storage unit for you and your family’s bikes is great. A toy box your kids keep all of their toys in can also be an option. Figure out how you can create a space for specific items, and put things away after use.

3. Have a Set Routine

Taking a haphazard approach to cleaning your home doesn’t always work out too well. You’ll end up letting a mess build up before doing anything about it. It’s worth preventing that as much as you can. Creating a cleaning routine could be helpful to avoid overhwhelming cleaning and tidying up sessions.

It’s just a matter of figuring out when certain tasks should be done. Perhaps you’ll allocate a day for doing laundry, or perhaps putting on one wash per day would work better for your schedule. Whatever you decide, you’ll end up keeping your home clean and tidy by being consistent.

4. Set Weekend Chores

Speaking of a routine, you shouldn’t overlook the weekend. Messes don’t just build up during the weekday, after all. It’s worth putting a bit of time and effort into it, and setting some weekend chores can be one of the better ways of doing this.

Have specific tasks for everyone to do during the weekend. While you shouldn’t fill up the weekend with these chores, it’s worth having a few of them to keep your home tidy. Even a 30 minute speed clean on Saturday and Sunday could be enough to stay on track.

5. Clean As You Go

As great as a routine can be to keep your home tidy, it doesn’t mean neglecting everywhere outside of your routine. It’s always worth cleaning as you go, and this offers more than a few benefits. It helps to make sure there isn’t a lot to clean up later on, saving you some stress.

It’s just a matter of giving something a quick clean after you’ve used it, for example wiping down the kitchen worktop after you have used it, or giving the shower screen or bathroom sink a quick buff with a cloth. You can leave a more in-depth cleaning for part of your routine, and there’ll be a lot less to worry about.

Summing Up

Nobody wants to live in a dirty, messy home. Despite that, it can often end up happening. When you live a busy life and have a growing family, that’s especially true. If you want to make your family home tidier, but it feels too overwhelming, start small, build in routines and involve the family.

With the right strategies, it should be much easier than you think! Decluttering at the start and then making a few house cleaning rules and routines will get you on top of things in next to no time. We all live in our homes, we all make a mess, it should therefore be a team effort to fix!
