The garden never really stops growing. Even if you stop planting and tending to it, it’s an alive, breathing entity, and while some things change pace or fade out, the reality is there is still life even when the ground is cold and your hands hurt.
And if you want to make sure your garden looks its best all year round and adds beauty to smile about, whatever the reason, these hardy plants are exactly what you need, and ignore the frost even if you can’t.
Hellebores
A quiet winter garden champion, the evergreen Hellebore blooms in winter and early spring, and is a joy for any garden that needs colour and life over the colder seasons. With its long flowering seasons and the ability to withstand cold and even snow, if you want something, you can gaze upon it out of the window this winter, you need this hardy flower that comes back year after year.
Hardy Lillies
Hardy lilies aren’t going to bloom in the winter; they will show up year after year, and they’re seemingly impervious to whatever the winter wants to throw at them. Hardy plants aren’t all about when they bloom; they’re about what they can survive, and if you want something that is going to stand the test of time and the great British winter, then hardy garden lilies and Hemerocallis are exactly what you need.
Foxglove
A garden staple, the tubular purple pink flowers are a showstopper and come into their own around June to September for that late summer, early autumn bloom. They don’t like overly wet weather, however, but they have a two-year life cycle, meaning you can expect a few seasons of them before they outstay their welcome. However, they do self-seed, so that once they’re established, they will be part of your garden for years to come.
Crab Apple
Known for its pretty bloom, the crab apple is the spring stunner. It is drought-tolerant and perfect for smaller gardens, and the scent alone is worth adorning this hardy beauty in your flower beds.
The crab apple can grow up to 10 meters. Just so you know, it’s a magnet for wildlife, so if you want to really bring your garden’s life and add extra benefits, you can’t go wrong with this beauty.
Primrose
While the UK won’t ever reach these lows, it’s good to know the popular primrose can withstand temperatures down to -20C. It can thrive in sunlight or shade, and its pale yellow blooms can appear in mid-December and last until around May, making it a perfect post-Christmas/New Year pick-me-up for your garden needs. In the absence of any natural sunlight, the yellow flowers of the primrose can be a sight for tired eyes.
Honeysuckle
This deciduous beauty is ideal for attracting wildlife and supporting butterflies, bees, and birds. It’s a climber, making it perfect for smaller spaces, as you can add it to walls or fences for added visual appeal, and the delicate shades of pink, yellow, and cream will be aesthetically pleasing for most gardens. Plus, it can grow in shade or the sun, and it isn’t fussy about soil either
