8 Tips to Design an Industrial-Style Kitchen

Photo by Bluewater Sweden on Unsplash

The industrial style has been a popular choice for many homeowners and takes inspiration from spaces such as factories. In short, it encourages individuals to embrace natural and stripped-back elements rather than modern materials.

If you’re in love with this theme but have doubts, you don’t have to be overwhelmed. In fact, compared to most styles, it’s relatively easy to get started.

In this article, we are going to take a look at eight tips you can follow to design a breathtaking industrial kitchen.

Sound interesting? Then keep on reading!

Use reclaimed materials

One main feature of an industrial space is reclaimed materials. These are things that are re-used during construction and can be considered recyclable.

You might also try combining different materials together yourself. Leather, wood, concrete, and stainless steel are just a few popular choices that you can choose from.

Choose clean, functional furniture

When you’re selecting furnishings for your kitchen, you want to stick to clean lines and always choose things that are functional. If it doesn’t have a purpose, it’s not necessary!

Check out this industrial kitchen table, for example. The black and timber look great together, and there are extendable options for when you need a little extra room.

Keep things looking rough

One of the main advantages of the industrial theme is that things don’t have to be perfect. Instead of trying to cover up mistakes and bare surfaces, use them as a talking point and stand-out feature.

Leave the concrete walls and keep the exposed brick. If there are visible pipes, consider giving them a coat of paint to help them stand out even more. You would be surprised at how “messy “can still look stylish.

Maximize large open areas

Another significant aspect of industrial areas is that they are always open and usually have high ceilings. If you’re completely redesigning a space, make sure you keep this in mind and avoid overcrowding with too many pieces.

A kitchen island with a set of stools is a good choice and serves a convenient purpose. However, you should stay away from this if you are already working with a small area.

Consider vintage décor

Industrial style and a vintage home go together very well. When you’re selecting décor, hit the thrift shops, garage sales, and market stalls to find some hidden treasures.

Aim for unique pieces that you wouldn’t find anything else. If something looks a little worse for wear, that’s completely fine! It will only add to the rustic vibe.

This is also an excellent time to add in a bit of colour. Red or yellow can brighten up the space while getting away from a completely black pallet.

Check out these great thrifting tips to get started.

Strip everything bare

As we’ve mentioned above, industrial is all about embracing existing elements. If the kitchen you are remodeling has had a lot of changes, don’t be scared to strip back everything bare.

You might remove old paint or take up the flooring and utilize the original floorboards. The older aspects of your home will generally tie in with the new aesthetic. Just make sure you hire professional help before you go biting off more than you can chew.

Install open shelving

Some people like to keep all of their utensils covered, but industrial kitchens are all about open shelving. Not only does it add to the functionality, but it saves you from having to worry about too much décor.

If you don’t want to go completely open, consider mixing both options so that you can keep those messy items hidden but those beautiful pots and pans on display. Don’t forget to add some racks and tray shelves for easy access too.

Create a feature wall

Finally, the last important part of the industrial theme is to create a feature wall. If you don’t have exposed brick, consider getting some wallpaper or stickers to fake the appearance.

If you’re not a fan of this, there are even ones that look like cement or stones. It’s affordable, fun, and really will make a big difference to the final product.

Final words

And that’s it! These were eight tips to help you design a beautiful industrial-style kitchen. As you can see, it doesn’t have to be a daunting process if you know where to begin. By following the above, you can create a great space for the entire family to enjoy.

 Good luck!
