How to Decide on Your Dog’s Diet

Dogs can eat and survive on a whole lot of things, but believe it or not, most of them are quite bad for them. Since you want the best for your pooch, it’s only natural to be inquisitive about what you can or cannot feed them. More importantly, how should you go about deciding on your dog’s diet to begin with? Well, it’s not as difficult as you might think, provided you follow some ground rules.

Go to a Veterinarian First

There is no question about the importance of consulting with a veterinarian before making any big changes to your dog’s diet. If you are a new dog owner, this is of exceptional importance, but even if you have owned the same dog for years, you will still need to consult with the vet about your pet’s diet from time to time. The reason for that will become more obvious after you go through the next point.

Dogs Have Different Dietary Requirements During Different Stages of their Lives

All animals change their diet as they grow up, so your dog is not an exception to that rule either. However, dogs need to have their diets changed and adjusted in both quantity and nutrients several times throughout their lifetime to keep them in optimum health conditions.

On top of that, there is always a chance that your favourite pet might develop a few medical conditions along the way. The chances of that happening can be mitigated with frequent diet reviews. Not all of it can be avoided of course, but frequent diet reviews will allow you to keep your pet’s medical conditions in check as best as possible.

All Pet Food Should Only be Bought from Trusted Brands

After you have consulted with your vet regarding the kind of diet that your dog needs to follow at any given time, make sure that you get the advised dog food from a reliable brand like Applaws. Brands without a history or good reputation will sell you the pet food you want at incredibly low prices, but never step into that trap.

Keep the old adage about things being too good to be true in mind and avoid them. Check the ingredients list to see what they really contain but know even that is no assurance against bad pet food. No name pet food brands are infamous for manufacturing pet food that have little to no relation with what they print on the back of their products.

Get to Know the Toxic Foods

There are foods that a dog will eat if provided, but they absolutely must not be provided!

  • Grapes and raisins
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Chives
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Avocados
  • Xylitol (a sugar alternative)
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol

If a dog ends up with any of the above in their stomach, it can lead to lot of discomfort, pain, heartache, and in worst case scenarios, even death. Some of the stuff may not be immediately toxic in small quantities, but it’s never a good idea to take such unnecessary risks.
