Do you have kids? You probably understand exactly how hard it can be to organise their things. It’s not easy to get rid of their clutter, to store away their toys, to arrange their books and their crayons, because it never stays in the same place. When the room is small, especially their bedroom, and the space is minimal, it can be a disaster when it comes to trying to organise everything.
The good news is that you can have a tidy small kids bedroom, you just have to be really intentional about the way that you organise things. With some clever and strategic storage and organisation techniques, you can ensure that your child’s bedroom is easy to deal with. You don’t have to invest in a whole new bedroom extension and you don’t have to swap your room for theirs. You just have to be smart about how you organise it. So with that in mind, we’ve put together a big list of things that you could be doing to organise your child’s bedroom.
- Think about the bed that you’re using. In a smaller children’s bedroom, it can be a better idea to use a high sleeper that has storage space underneath it so that you don’t take up too much floor space in the bedroom. If you have lots of storage shelves and crates and a bed, you’re going to cover up the whole of the carpet. A high sleeper could give you somewhere for your child to sleep, but also somewhere for all of their things to be stored. This can make a big difference to the amount of space that you have in the bedroom.
- Use stack crates. When it comes to organising their toys, storage crates are actually your best friends because places like IKEA can give you storage crate storage so that everything can be put into one place. For example, IKEA Kallax units are fantastic for toy storage because they have up to 8 different spaces for you to be able to slot boxes into. If you don’t want to use boxes, you can use the shelves as they are.
- Invest in multi functional furniture. We already mentioned the high sleeper beds, but there are so many options when it comes to your child’s bedroom. A bed that has storage drawers underneath it can help you to stir away numerous things in these beds. You can even make storage out of existing furniture pieces such as storage boxes or installed drawers in bookshelves and use them as a makeshift closet. As you’re limited on space, you have to rely on every single piece of furniture to work in more than just one way. Drop leaf tables are actually fantastic as desks in a bedroom because you can secure them to the wall and the flap of the table stays down until they’re going to use the desk.
- Built in a bench. If you want a storage lifesaver for small bedrooms, then you need to look at built-in benches. You can install drawers under them so that they hold tiny toys or clothes, or you can turn it into a bookshelf. The whole area can then be a makeshift reading corner for the kids and it works very well as they get older too. Other things you can store in these benches include shoes, bags, and accessories, so having those built-in benches can work as a multifunctional seating space and a bench for them to store things.
- Maximise closet storage. If your child has a closet in their bedroom that’s built in, then closets are a popular place to Stow things away that aren’t just clothes, shoes and bags. One of the best investments you could have in a closet is a top shelf, which is above head height. This can store all of the things that they don’t use on a daily basis but do still need. It’s likely that you’re probably not using up all of the closet space that you have, so hanging all of your kids clothes in the closet may not be the best idea. There could be more space taken up compared to folded clothes, but if you have a larger closet or your child is smaller and doesn’t have many clothes, you can use the space properly. You can put their storage boxes in here for their toys in their closets as well to keep them out of the main bedroom. If they have too many things, storage boxes can be placed in the closet and used to keep their shoes, bags and clothes intact.
- Add some book bins. You can make these yourselves if you want to create a book bin out of wood. You can join planks together to build a box. Get the kids involved by painting the box in fun colours or creating designs. You can add pegs on the floor to make them standing boxes as well. These boxes can then be used as book bins, which can come in handy for other things too. Eventually, they can be used for soft toy storage or even blanket storage.

- Combined play and storage in the same place. A doll house and placing all of the toys inside it is a great way to use both plate items as storage items. This can work in any kind of kids bedroom, whether it’s small or large. If you don’t use their toys or playing areas of storage, you may never be able to have an organised room. You can also get clever about how baskets, bins and crates can be used in your child’s play area. Baskets, for example, can be a great addition to your child’s pretend kitchen. Bins and crates can be used in an area for building or reading. There are so many ways that you can incorporate these things in a child’s bedroom. You just have to get clever.
- Build some shelves up the walls. Utilising vertical space is a great thing to do if you want to organise a smaller bedroom. You can add these shelves on the walls to the ceiling and arrange toys or books on them, and they can act as a chic Decor item too. Simple sets of shelves can be quite boring, so make sure that you get in with some fun colours and align this with the overall bedroom theme.
- Repurpose spice shelves. One of the most interesting storage hacks for a small child’s bedroom is that you can use spice racks as bookshelves. Because you can put them up onto the walls and you can stand the books up in them. You’ll be able to use them and.In a way that makes sense. By getting the books off of the closet floor and out of the boxes, you can utilise the wall space to store their books and that makes a big difference to how the room looks.
- Install a pegboard. Peg boards in a smaller bedroom are a great way to store a number of things. By adding a pegboard, you’ll have somewhere to hang coats, bags, scarves and other clothing items. You can even add baskets to store any diapers, toiletries or socks. Any tiny accessories that they have can be stowed away on a pegboard, especially those you need while on the go. For older children, pegboards are great to add a basket to for any badges or buttons or necklaces they may have.
- Stay light with the colour palette. One of the most subtle ways to make your small child bedroom appear larger and more organised is by using a lighter, pastel colour palette. This helps you to really open up the room, so think about pastel and baby colours like mint green and light yellow. Small rooms can feel very closed in when the colours on the walls are dark. Painting the wall, shelves and the bed with these colours can also help you to brighten the space instantly and make it look bigger.
- Invest in teddy hammocks. If your child has a lot of stuffed animals, having teddy hammocks strung up by the ceiling with their teddies that they don’t use very often stored inside them is a great way to keep them off the floor. Teddies can actually be one of the fastest ways to crowd the bedroom. Organising their teddies in hammocks above their heads allows you to utilise more ceiling space so that you don’t have to worry about using the floor space all the time.
- Use bean bags. Another great way to hack storing their teddies is to use bean bags. Unzipping a bean bag and stuffing them with stuffed animals can really help to give them somewhere soft to sit, but also somewhere safer. Stuffed animals can take up too much space and this can actually help you to curb the problem. You can make DIY bean bags yourself with brightly coloured and textured sheets. All you have to do is add foam and stitch them together with the stuffed animals inside.
