When it comes to home improvement, it’s the bathroom that often tops the list – after all, it’s one of the most used rooms in the house, and it’s a place everyone goes to at least a couple of times a day, so not only is it a good place to get looking exactly as you want it to, but it’s also the room that potentially sees the most wear and tear, so it often needs a renovation anyway. And if you’re going to make changes and upgrades to your bathroom, it’s worthwhile considering how to do it to create a stylish yet also highly functional modern bathroom that you’ll love and that can really set the tone for the rest of your home – and it might even add some value too. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a few of the things you can do – read on to find out more.

Maximize Storage
What makes a bathroom look great? Well, there are a few different things, of course, and we’ll go through lots of them in this post, but one thing that’s going to instantly transform a bathroom and make it look amazing, even before you make any changes to the decor, is ensuring you’ve got enough storage. One of the biggest challenges you’ll find with a bathroom is finding enough storage space while also keeping the room clean, uncluttered, and lovely, but there are actually plenty of storage solutions you can use and invest in that will really make a difference and do the trick.
One option to consider is recessed shelving, for example, and this is actually something that’s really popular when it comes to modern bathrooms and design ideas. These built-in shelves are installed into the wall, so you’ll get more storage and you won’t lose any floor space to get it. They’re particularly useful in smaller bathrooms where every inch really does count, and you can really put it anywhere it’s going to be useful, including in your shower, next to the vanity, or even near the bath for easy access to things like toiletries, towels, and all kinds of other essentials.
Or what about having a floating vanity? Floating vanities are another design feature that maximizes space and also gives your bathroom a fantastically modern feel and look, so it’s definitely not a bad idea. You mount the vanity to the wall so you’ve got space left beneath it, and in that way you’ve got your storage, but you’ve also got a moreairy feel which makes the room feel bigger.
If you’re looking for a more traditional design for your bathroom, you can choose some vintage-looking standalone pieces like slim cabinets or decorative baskets to fill leftover gaps, and they’ll not only be great storage – they’ll double as beautiful decor too. Just be sure to choose pieces that match your bathroom’s overall design and color scheme so it all looks intentional, otherwise things can get messy.
A Walk In Shower
Walk in showers used to be something that was only seen in very expensive and high-end bathrooms, but today you can have a walk in shower on almost any budget, and they’re a great idea too – they’re elegant, practical, and accessible for everyone, so no matter who you are or what kind of bathroom you’ve got, this kind of shower is sure to fit just perfectly.
One thing that people like a lot about walk in showers in that they’ve got such an open and airy design, and unlike traditional showers or showers that also double as baths, which tend to be smaller and much more enclosed, walk in showers don’t have any barriers, which instantly makes them feel more comfortable to use, and look better to. The design works in any kind of bathroom, but if you want to maximize space, then it’s a must, especially if you’ve got a frameless shower door or perhaps no door at all because you’ll have a wonderful design that you’ll love using and that could be exactly what your bathroom needs to modernize it and keep it perfectly functional.
Natural Elements

Perhaps you’ve already incorporated natural elements – something known as biophilic design – into other rooms in your home because you like how it looks and feels, and you know it’s good for your health too; plants and other natural elements can make you more relaxed and less stressed, and living plants can also help purify the air, so it’s a win-win. But perhaps you haven’t considered extending this idea into the bathroom. Well, if you haven’t and you want to make some changes in the bathroom, now’s the time to think about going greener and more natural in there.
And of course, using natural elements like stone, wood, or bamboo, for example, in your bathroom is a really easy thing to do; once you start looking, you’ll see that there are loads of different options for you because it’s such a popular choice for a lot of people. Just some examples of what you could include are teak shower benches, bamboo towel racks, walnut vanities, and stone tiles – and that’s just a start! When you’ve got these things in place, you’ll have an organic, natural, warm, relaxing bathroom that feels so good you’ll be happy spending time in there and really enjoy the stress-relieving properties it can give you.
Another way to include natural elements in your bathroom to modernize the look and feel of the space is to get as much natural light in there as you can. It really pays if you can install large windows or perhaps a skylight, and if you can’t do that, then strategically placed mirrors that reflect the light you do have might do the job nicely. And even if your bathroom doesn’t have access to a lot of natural light, you can mimic the effect by using warm, natural-colored lighting and materials that reflect light, like light-colored tiles and shiny or glossy finishes.
Statement Lighting
Speaking of lighting, if you are going to have artificial light in your bathroom (and even the brightest room filled with as much natural light as possible is going to need some), then make sure it’s something impressive that stands out and makes a statement – the lighting you choose can be a big part of your overall design, so it’s certainly a good thing to take your time over.
One big trend in bathroom lighting is layered lighting, which means using different types of lighting (ambient, task, and accent) to give you a balanced space you can use for whatever you need. To make it clearer, ambient lighting is what gives you your main illumination, while task lighting is about focusing on specific areas, like the vanity, for example. Then there’s accent lighting which is more decorative than anything else, and can be used to highlight your favorite features in the bathroom, if you have any (and if you’re re-designing things, you probably will).
Monochrome Scheme
We’ve discussed how you can use warm tones and natural colors to make your bathroom look great, but there is another option too – monochrome. This black and white color scheme has always been popular, and it really doesn’t ever go out of style, and on top of that, it tends to give a bathroom a more organized and orderly feel, which is often exactly what you need.
Although you’ll probably have thought of black and white when it comes to monochrome, and that is what we’ve based this idea off, it’s really about neutral shades, so you can have some variation when you’re choosing how to decorate the room. Whites, grays, and blacks are the dominant colors, and if you can use some subtle shades then you can, with some good planning, give the room a lot more depth. Or how about really taking the idea to heart and going for an all-white bathroom? That’s a really classic choice and it’s classic and well-loved for a reason; it’s hygienic, easy to maintain, and you can find items that match your scheme everywhere, so you can easily turn your bathroom into a perfectly personalized room just for you.
If you want to take the idea further still, you can opt for a minimalist design when it comes to your fixtures and fittings. Streamlined, wall-mounted taps, hidden toilet cisterns, frameless mirrors, and similar items can all fit into that category nicely, and give you a gorgeous, minimalist feeling to your final design. The key is simplicity, so if there’s a way to do something more simply, that’s what you need to do. There can’t be any unnecessary fuss or clutter, which is another reason why storage is such an important element to get right, but rather than feeling sterile and clinical, the overall look of a monochrome and minimalist bathroom is one that’s absolutely fabulous and that you’ll be happy to call yours once it’s all in place. If you really want to make things a little more unique, however, why not add some texture to literally make various elements stand out?
