Iconic Elegance: How Fashion Legends Dress Themselves

Being elegant in the fashion world seems like it should be easy. You just follow the trends and find something that works for you.

But when you get down to it, it can be more difficult than you think. Things don’t always go to plan.

Fortunately, this guide is here to help. We explore some of the things you can do to achieve iconic elegance, just like the fashion legends.

Pick Quality Over Quantity

The first place to start is with quality over quantity. Knowing the value of craftsmanship can be an excellent way to begin your adventure.

It’s usually better to have a few exceptional pieces than to rely on fast fashion or replacing things every week when you go to the clothes store.

For example, it’s not worth buying dozens of ill-fitting leggings when you could invest the same amount of money in a blazer that could last for ten years. Similarly, your wardrobe won’t exude luxury if you always go for plastic earrings instead of gold necklaces.

Add Personal Touches That Tell A Story

The next step is to add personal touches that tell a story. You want your wardrobe to say something interesting about you, and give you that sense of celebrity mystique.

Sometimes, this means making somewhat unusual choices. For example, you do something similar to Diane von Fürstenberg’s wrap dress which became all about femininity.

Unfortunately, this process isn’t something you can rush. Ideally, you want items that reflect your history and grow with you over time. These can make your style authentically yours.

Break More Rules

Strange as it might sound, fashion legends also dress themselves by breaking rules. Whether you feel equipped to do this or not in your life depends on you, but it is certainly a theme.

One way to break the rules is with bold silhouettes. If you can change your outline in a new way, that is certainly something that will make an impression on the people you meet.

You could also try going down the punk styling route if that’s something that might work in your life. Being rebellious is often something that garners attention.

Be More Confident

They often say that being confident is the ultimate accessory. That’s not quite true, but it will get you a long way in many situations. Having a certain self-assurance can help considerably.

The more unapologetic you are, the more people will begin to associate your fashion choices with you. It almost becomes acceptable because you’re the one wearing it.

Being more confident is transformative and lets you do things that others can’t. Eventually, you will discover that you fit more comfortably with your clothes.

Understated Accessories

Fashion legends also dress themselves with understated accessories. These follow the “less is more” philosophy.

Coco Chanel is famous for adopting this approach. She was a believer that it was essential to take at least one thing off before leaving the house to avoid making any outfit look cluttered.

This trick can be especially helpful if you’re the type of person who loves accessories. Removing a brooch or hair pin can work wonders when done in the right way.

Go Neutral

Going neutral is also something the fashion legends are fond of doing. While it might not seem very flamboyant, it is highly effective and adds a sense of timeless elegance that’s hard to find with colorful gowns and garments.

Yves Saint Laurent is famous for taking this approach. He likes to pair neutral backgrounds with more luxurious highlights, like spectacular necklaces or jewellery.

You can match this approach by building your wardrobe around the idea that you want to effortlessly mix and match items. Focusing on using bright colors sparingly is usually the way to go.

Tailoring Is Essential

You will also notice that fashion icons always tailor their clothes to their bodies. These allow them to transform even the most rudimentary garment options into something special.

Thom Browne was a key figure who liked to do this whenever he was in public. The improved proportions meant that he had almost a second skin.

To copy this approach, all you need are a few tailored items that bring your outfits together. Getting your dresses, trousers, and blazers cut to size can be an excellent way to strut your stuff, just like you’re on the catwalk.

When experimenting with the looks of fashion legends, don’t be afraid to mix high fashion with low. Combining the two can be one of the most effective ways to create new looks.
