Summer 2026 has brought a welcome dose of colour back into our wardrobes. Designers from Chloé to Chanel sent models down the runway in cobalt blue and butter yellow, while natural fabrics like linen and organic cotton are proving popular on the high street.
A few considered updates to pieces you already own can carry you through the whole season looking put together without overheating.
Refresh your basics with lightweight layers

You probably already own a decent white T-shirt and a pair of well-fitting trousers. The simplest way to make that foundation feel current is by adding a lightweight layer on top, something like an unlined linen blazer or a relaxed cotton overshirt. A linen blazer thrown over a vest top and wide-leg trousers gives you enough structure to look intentional while keeping air moving around your body.
Dress comfortably for park days and casual outings
When you’re spending the afternoon outside, for example a picnic in a local park or a wander round a city market, you want clothes that let you move freely and cope with unpredictable British weather. A midi dress in cotton or a linen blend does the job well because it covers you without clinging, and you can throw a denim jacket over it if the wind picks up. Swap heels for flat sandals or clean white trainers, and you’ll stay comfortable on your feet for hours.
Choose versatile outfits for evening dates
Evening plans in summer can take you anywhere from a rooftop bar to a riverside restaurant, so you need pieces that look polished without feeling overdone. A well-fitted black dress is hard to beat as you can dress it up with heeled mules and gold jewellery for somewhere smart, or wear it with flat sandals and a crossbody bag when the vibe is more laid-back.
If dresses aren’t your thing, tailored linen trousers with a sleeveless blouse in cobalt or burnt orange offer a similarly flexible base.
Pack smart for road trips and weekend getaways
Build your bag around a neutral base. White and beige work well, then add one or two bolder items that you can mix in across different outfits. A pair of versatile shorts, a couple of tops in different weights and one dressier option will cover most situations over a long weekend. Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves a surprising amount of space, too.
Add colour and accessories for a seasonal update
A cobalt blue crossbody bag or a pair of burnt orange earrings can make a neutral outfit feel summery without costing much. Lightweight cotton or silk scarves also work well, try wearing one as a headband or tying it to a bag handle for an easy pop of colour. Even a single bold piece against a plain outfit gives the impression you’ve put real thought into what you’re wearing.
