Renovating your home without breaking your wallet

If you want to refresh your home or add some value to your property, home renovations are an excellent idea. However, the thought of the initial outlay can be daunting. Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways to give your home a lift without breaking your wallet. Below, we explore how you can renovate your home on a budget.

Where to start?

To start with, you’ll need to calculate your budget. This should be a figure that you can comfortably afford to spend, even if the project goes over the budget. From there, you should consider the renovations you want to complete. These might be simple DIY projects that you can complete yourself, or they might be complex operations that require planning permission and the help of an architect. If you’re going for something more complex, you’ll need to draw up some designs before exploring the legality of your plans. After this point, you can begin to plan the schedule of your work and hire the right contractors to take on your work.

Raising money before starting

If you have your heart set on renovations that are slightly over your budget, or if you just need to gather some finances for your renovations, you’ll need to consider how you’ll get the money together. One option is a pawnbroking loan: this is where you use an asset – be it a watch or jewellery – to secure a loan with the asset acting as collateral. Alternatively, you could dip into your savings to raise money for the loan. Or you could explore paying for your renovations on your credit card if the fee isn’t too substantial. Finally, if your renovations are going to cost a significant sum, then you could consider remortgaging your home. If the renovations are projected to raise the value of your home, it could be a sensible financial decision.

Renovating your house on a budget

There are also ways that you can save money while renovating your home, ensuring that you stick to your budget. For a start, proper planning can ensure that your renovations are sensible and that they’re completed on time and on budget. Meanwhile, you should also focus on the colours you use – by going for light, neutral colours, you can make your home feel refreshed at a low cost. Finally, you should consider storage solutions too. By storing your items in a clever, discrete manner, you can de-clutter your house and give it a lift at a minimal cost.

Home renovations don’t have to break the bank. Whether you’re looking to overhaul your home or make slight changes, you can follow the advice above to finance it carefully.
