Bathroom Tiles: Practical Alternatives To Natural Stone

Collaborative post with CTD Tiles

If a bathroom update is on the cards for you this year and you are bored of plain white wall tiles, perhaps it is time to totally transform your space. I recently partnered with CTD Tiles, a supplier of fantastic looking and affordable tiles, with an array of tile inspiration and ideas for you to dive into to help you plan this kind of makeover.

For me, nothing says luxury quite like a natural marble or stone tile. Whether you want to go fully tiled (walls tiles and floor) or just in specific areas such as in the shower and around the sink, there are many beautiful tile options you could choose from! Let’s take a look at those which give the look of natural stone materials, without the hefty price tag!

Travertine Tiles

A bathroom that gives off spa-style vibes is always appealing for some pampering at home and travertine tiles work beautifully in creating this effect.

Travertine is a natural stone product.  Beautiful and durable, it has long been a popular choice for bathrooms. You can even get gorgeous travertine sinks for that perfect organic and natural look. However, you should never use an acid or chemical cleaner when caring for the surface. For the ultimate in ease, convenience – and cost saving – consider a tile that perfectly mimics the look of travertine, but in a more practical porcelain.

Marble Tiles

A marble bathroom is the height of luxury. There is something very special about being surrounded by marble. It feels so exclusive. Marble is a beautiful natural material, but can be accurately and sympathetically reproduced in a man-made format, e.g. porcelain. As mentioned above, porcelain tiles are extremely practical for a bathroom. They can be either be glazed or unglazed and are great for walls and floors, due to their strength.  They are much harder than ordinary ceramic tiles and, even though a bit more expensive, it is worth paying the extra for their durability.  However, these tiles are also more difficult to cut, which makes fitting trickier and porcelain may need sealing, where ordinary glazed tiles do not.

There is a vast range of porcelain tiles available on the market, so you will not be limited in your choice of pattern or colour, and they are easy to clean, not prone to cracking and will last a long time, so are a great option for the modern home. For the luxury marble look, consider a beautiful marble effect tile such as this:

Limestone Tiles

Limestone is a type of sedimentary stone.  Being a natural material, limestone tiles have a unique look and feel. Highly polished tiles are slightly harder for water to penetrate than those with a matt finish, however as limestone is porous it needs to be sealed for use in a bathroom. This is why man-made tiles with a limestone look are very advantageous in the bathroom.

Affordable glazed ceramic tiles can convincingly convey the natural, neutral tones of limestone. Opt for a light bone colour and you will create a harmonious and soothing space, whether in a family bathroom, ensuite or wet room.

Ultimately, the look you want to achieve and your available budget dictates what sort of tiles you go for when creating a natural looking bathroom. It’s good to know there are so many high-performing, great looking products that can create the perfect look.
