How To Choose The Perfect Sofa For Any Room

Image

Browsing sofas? How exciting! It’s not always the easiest choice to make, especially if you’re looking for a comfortable couch in the right size, colour and material to help you make a house into a home. But don’t fret too much, this guide is here to guide you through the process.

Understand room dimensions and layout

It doesn’t matter how nice a sofa is – if it doesn’t fit in your living space, it’s not the one for you. First, measure the room you’re buying for and test how different dimensions would fit. You don’t want to overwhelm a small space, but you also don’t want a sofa to feel lost in a larger one.

Consider the layout, too. Walking space around a sofa maximises functionality in the room and ensures easy access. Particular shapes and sizes might limit this. Some quick floor plans sketched out on paper can make the planning process easier.

Explore different sofa styles and sizes

There are plenty of options when it comes to sofa styles, shapes and sizes. From big, comfy corner sofas with plenty of room for everyone to more modest two-seaters perfect for an intimate living room, you’ll need to choose one that works for you and your space.

There’s no right or wrong – just what fits what you need. A long three or four-seater sofa could provide a natural divide in open-plan layouts, while a modular option could give you the versatility needed to make the most of a smaller room.

A sofa bed could be the perfect option for a spare bedroom or home office. Something with built-in storage could be a multi-purpose investment to help you stay on top of clutter. Perhaps a recliner is what you need to relax after a long day.

Find the right material

Don’t forget the importance of selecting the right materials. Your choice of upholstery is important for practicality as well as aesthetic appeal, particularly if you’re a household with children and pets.

Leather is a great option if you want something durable and easy to clean. Synthetic microfibres and polyester are also very durable and can withstand heavy use, wear, tear and fading better than many natural alternatives.
If the feel and touch of your sofa are a priority, materials such as bouclé provide a soft, warm, teddy bear-like texture. This is perfect for snuggling up with a hot drink and a blanket in winter.

Match the colour with your space

Colour is key, too. The right colour can complement your surrounding space or stand out in the right way as a statement piece.

Neutral greys and beiges or soft blues and greens work well with many interiors, while bolder shades bring heaps of personality and energy if that’s what you’re looking for. Consider the room’s colour palette and see what option completes it best.
