How to Plan a Wedding on a Budget

Weddings have a reputation for being expensive and it’s well deserved – according to a survey conducted by hitched.co.uk, the average wedding in 2021 cost more than £17,000.

Whether your number is above or below this average figure, one thing’s for sure – it will be a hefty sum. So what are some ways in which you can reduce the cost of your special day? We’ve written this short article to answer that question. Read on for our advice on how to plan a wedding on a budget.

Set a budget

After your first house, your wedding is likely going to be one of the biggest purchases that you ever make with your partner. Because of this, it’s really important that you are both on the same page.
Sit down and have an open discussion with your partner. What can you each afford and how much will you be able to save over the coming months? These considerations will help you to create your budget and continue to keep your finances in order.

Be smart about the venue

Of course, you don’t want to get married just anywhere. However, you need to be careful not to break the bank on the venue – according to data released by Statista, venues were the largest wedding cost in 2019-20. Hired wedding venues cost the most but you could cut down costs by holding your ceremony at a church or register office.

Pick the right time

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as a wedding season. It usually takes place between the months of May and October, with the majority of UK weddings taking place in June, July and August. During these times, suppliers are able to charge more than their services and products are worth thanks to the large demand.

You could save a sizeable chunk of cash simply by hosting your wedding out of season in months like January or February instead. Similarly, consider choosing to have your wedding during the week rather than on a Saturday.

Keep it intimate

You don’t have to invite absolutely everyone to your special day; only the most important people such as family and close friends. Keep your wedding as intimate as possible and you’ll be able to save across the board.

What are you doing to help to reduce the cost of your wedding? Share your tips and tricks with us in the comments section!
