Decluttering is something we all need to do occasionally to stop our home getting too overcrowded and chaotic. But just when should you plan to declutter? Below are a few key times when it’s beneficial to go on a decluttering spree.
At the beginning of a new year
If you have kids, Xmas is likely to come with a flood of new gifts. January could be a good time to declutter to make room for all the new toys and clothes. You may also be able to sell certain items to help financially recover from the Christmas spending. Being the start of the year, it’s also a great time for making a fresh start – you may mentally feel that you’re in the mood for decluttering and redecorating. Some people wait until March to carry out the traditional Spring clean. However, others may find that they’re more motivated at the very start of the year.
When you’re thinking of moving home
Moving home is an excellent time to declutter – you’re going to be sorting through every item in your home anyway, so you may as well take the time there and then to get rid of some stuff. Decluttering before you move can also potentially reduce the cost of moving. A house removals company will charge you less if you don’t have as much stuff to transport. It’s also a chance to begin a clutter-free fresh start in your new home.
When you’re carrying out home improvements
When carrying out home improvements, you may have to temporarily move a lot of items. This could be a good time to sort through these possessions and throw out anything that you don’t want or need anymore. This can also prevent you from moving a load of clutter into your new kitchen or bathroom so that you can enjoy it in its clean and tidy new state.
When you’re expecting new arrivals to the family
Thinking of raising a family? Or perhaps you’re already expecting a little one? Decluttering your home could help you to make room for all the baby stuff you’ll need. If you’re getting a dog or cat, you may similarly want to declutter beforehand – both to remove any potential hazards and to allow space for pet equipment like beds and feeding bowls. It could be much harder to declutter once your new family member is brought home, so plan to do it in advance.
When you have the free time
Got a free weekend coming up? This could be the perfect time to carry out a declutter. By scheduling decluttering ahead, you can avoid making any other last minute plans. Many people find that having a whole weekend motivates them to get stuck in – it’s much harder to motivate yourself to start decluttering if you know you’re not going to have time to finish it. That said, it is possible to declutter your home in small stages – dedicate an hour every day for a month, and you may be able to tackle the entire house. It just takes a lot more discipline!
