Top 6 Home Projects to Complete Before Winter Arrives

Throughout the winter, most of us tend to spend more time at home as the cold weather is more than enough excuse to get cosy under a blanket and with a hot chocolate. However, as winter approaches it is important that you get your home prepared for cold temperatures and sometimes disruptive weather, so that you can enjoy your time at home without any problems.

While we may think that our home is strong and can withstand any wind or rain, failure to prepare correctly could cause serious damage to your property that will take a lot of time and money to fix. So, here are the top 6 home projects we recommend you complete before winter arrives.

Check Your Windows

You should be sure to take the time to check and prepare your windows ready for the winter ahead, as they are essential if you want to stay protected from the cold weather this year. Even if you have double glazed windows, you should still double check that they are in good working order and not letting any kind of draught into your home.

If you have wooden windows and fail to keep on top of their condition, then bad weather and extremely cold temperatures can cause the wood to expand. Therefore, it is crucial that you fill in any cracks that you find in your windows, and re-paint them in order to keep them protected. This can make a huge difference to how cosy your house is this winter, as well as your heating bill.

Get a New Boiler

Many of us are guilty of not getting the boiler in our homes checked regularly enough. But this is something that you should stay on top of if you want to stay warm and cosy this winter. If you fail to regularly get your boiler checked and maintained, then you may find that you are landed with an unexpected bill.

Before the winter arrives, you should get your boiler serviced, and even consider replacing your old boiler with a new one. Even though most of us worry about the cost of new boiler, you can save money in the long run on your heating bills.

You can get a new boiler from BoilerCentral, who can talk you through new boiler prices in 2020, and the overall boiler replacement costs. BoilerCentral will help you find the right boiler for you and your home, and within a budget that you can afford. Getting a new boiler has never been easier!

Add New Lighting

There are interior design home projects that you can consider in preparation for winter. For example, you can add more subtle and warmer lighting to your home to make staying home on those winter nights even more enjoyable!

Protect Your Water Pipes

In the winter months, temperatures can go below freezing, which can result in your water pipes freezing over. This can be disastrous for both your home’s water access, as well as water leaks that it could cause. Therefore, we recommend that you protect any water pipes in advance of winter that run through unheated spaces, such as in the attic, or outside. Many homeowners use foam pipe as an extra layer of insulation, as it is both effective and inexpensive. This can lower the risk of your water pipes freezing over and causing water pipe bursts.

Replace the Flooring

Preparing your home for the winter does not just mean protecting the outside of your house, but also making the inside of your home ready for the cold season. Therefore, you may want to consider replacing the current flooring that you have at home. The flooring that you have in place can make a huge difference to how warm you feel at home. For example, if you have laminate flooring, then you will likely find that the house feels colder during the winter. So, you may instead decide to go for carpets and decorative rugs.

Clear Out Your Gutters

You may find that the guttering around your home can quickly become blocked up with moss, leaves, and other debris such as litter, which can lead to leaks and drainage issues. The gutters are an important part of your home and are crucial in having a fully functioning sewage system.

Therefore, we recommend that you clear out your gutters before winter hits, as blockages can be made worse by snow and rain and can cause more damage. Be sure to check for any cracks in your gutters when clearing them out, as this is a sign that they need to be replaced.

Preparing your home ahead of the winter season and completing some home projects can keep your house protected and make your home the best place to be this winter.
