5 Signs It’s Time To Renovate Your Home

Renovation is great if you want a big change, but moving is too drastic. With the right set of decisions, it can feel like you’ve moved into a whole new home. But your neighbours are the same, and you know the way to the local corner shop if you need to pop out for some milk.

But renovation is time-consuming and expensive. So how do you know when you are ready to renovate?

Can You Afford It?

It’s a boring step in preparing for a renovation, but a super important one. Renovations can feel like they eat money sometimes. It’s key to make sure you can comfortably afford to renovate because if some unexpected cost comes up, you don’t want to sacrifice your heating over the winter to pay for it.

If you have to stop mid-way through renovations because you can’t afford it anymore, you’re going to end up with a strange-looking house that lacks any cohesion.

 Do You Need More Space?

One of the most common signs that you are due a renovation is a lack of space. Lack of space can really cause problems, especially now when so many of us are working from home. Whether you need more space for work, children or a combination of both, a great way to get more space is through renovation.

That old junk room? It could turn into an office or a playroom. The bathroom downstairs, no one uses? How would you like a pantry…

Is Your House Falling Apart?

It’s a sure sign you’re due a renovation if your house is genuinely struggling to keep itself together. Whether this small – like flaking wallpaper – or large – crumbling ceilings – renovation can be a great motivator to piece your house back together.

When renovations are more structural than decorative, it can be a good idea to take professional advice from a builder and get costings so you know in advance how much you’re going to have to spend.  Always have a contingency budget of at least 10% to cover any unexpected costs.

Is Your House No Longer Reflective Of Your Style?

On average, we live in the same house for twenty-one years. Therefore, it’s very likely that over the course of living in your home, your tastes will change. The interior design you thought was top-notch when you moved in … well, you might not feel the same way about it now.

So if your style has changed, your house needs updating! Our homes are such an important place to reflect our style. You spend so much of your time there; you want it to feel like you. Also it’s a great way for visitors to the home to get to know you.

Some things you are going to need help with – unless you are a professional bathroom renovator of course.

Choosing your renovators is so important if you are renovating to update the style. One wrong move and you might end up with a house that doesn’t reflect your style – the main reason you wanted to renovate!

Using specialist companies means you can have more control over the look of your home. A kitchen renovation company will be better at making your vision come to life than an overall home renovator.

Whatever you choose, communication is key. Make sure your vision is heard and interpreted correctly. It’s worth sounding a little annoying if it means you get the home you always dreamed of.

Do You Want A Change?

Sometimes it’s as simple as this: you want a change. If you have the funds, why not? When your life feels repetitive (as it constantly does now, thanks to the pandemic!) making big changes in your home life is a good way to get out of the endless cycle.

If you want to turn things upside-down, a good way to create change through a renovation is to switch around rooms in your home. Obviously, it’s hard to change rooms that rely on electrics and piping – it’s unlikely you can turn your living room into a massive bathroom – but why not pick a room at the other end of the house for your bedroom? Why not switch around the dining room and the living room? Talk about a change! Imagine walking into your home and finding nothing in the place you were expecting.

Alternatively, adding extensions can be a great way to bring about change. A whole extra room or two not only adds extra space but also allows for new types of room. Always wanted a game room? Maybe an art studio? Here’s your way of doing it.

Renovation is a big decision, one that needs a lot of thinking about. But the benefits can really be massive. If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, maybe get planning.
