A little luxury home spruce up is always a good idea. It adds style and charm to your home. It can also offer you added home value. Even with a small budget, you can certainly still make a difference to the way your home looks. Here are some quick tips to help you!
1. Design for what you love to do best
Plan your living room according to your preferences. A cosy and workable living room starts with a good layout. The arrangement of furniture, carpets and lamps influences how comfortable we feel in a room. The best thing to do is to write down everything you like to do there. So you know what is important when arranging furniture. Possible questions you should ask yourself are:
- Who “lives” in the living room – that is, family, friends, visitors, playmates, pets.
- What do you like to do in your living room? – Watch TV, chat, read, play.
- What activities may you want to do together? Such as games, watching movies.
- Can different areas be planned for these activities?
2. Position furniture appropriately
The closer the furniture, the more homely and intimate the atmosphere. Group items together, but allow enough space to move around. Why not reupholster your furniture for added style? In this case you may want to look at Foam Cut to Size. Once this is done, you can work on using your stylish new furniture to create some great feng shui! Depending on your favourite activities, some arrangements to consider could be:
- An area for chatting – with comfortable seating and a coffee table
- An area around a game console, music system and television – with cushions and armchairs to lounge around on
- An area to play – with a soft carpet and space to run around (for kids)
- A small reading corner – with a large armchair, small table and reading lamp
3. Identify areas with rugs
Carpets and rugs improve room acoustics and give furniture a visual hold. When buying rugs, it is important to find the right size. Because rugs that are too large can overwhelm rooms, while those that are too small are visually lost. The following guidelines are helpful for living room rugs:
- Length of the rug = length of the sofa plus 20 to 30 centimeters left and right
- About a third of all furniture, such as sofas and armchairs, should have space around it.
5. Ensure your living room has good light
Living rooms love good light. And so will you. Because light is hard to beat when it comes to the atmosphere. A most important tip: never rely on one light, always use several lights to create ambiance and remember:
- Floor lamps are ideal for smaller seating groups or reading corners
- Table lamps work well for ambience lighting
- Pendant lights can also hang off-centre and a little lower in the living room
- Low floor lights – for example in a corner – are a good way to add cosiness
