6 Things to Do If You Have Too Much Stuff

We all, if we are honest, have too much stuff and that’s fine when we have enough space to contain it all, but when it starts to spill out all over the place, leaving your home cluttered and you and your family confused, then it is time to act, but what do you do when you have too much stuff?

  1. The One-Year Rule: Be Ruthless

If you haven’t used, worn, or even looked at something in the past year, chances are, you don’t need it. Apply the one-year rule: if it hasn’t seen the light of day in 12 months, it’s time to say goodbye. Be brutal. That old bread maker you thought you’d master? Gone. Those jeans you’ve been saving for when you lose a few pounds? Donate them. Let someone else enjoy the clutter-free bliss.

  1. Storage Units: Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Okay, so maybe you’re not ready to part with all your stuff. Enter the storage unit – your new best friend when you’re not quite ready to fully commit to the minimalist life. Storage units are perfect for those “I’ll need this someday” items, or sentimental bits you just can’t bring yourself to part with. Shove it all in a storage unit, and you’ll have a clutter-free home without the guilt of throwing things away. It’s like pressing pause on your stuff – genius, right?

  1. Organise Like a Pro

You don’t have to be a professional organiser to make sense of your space. Start small – like, really small. Tackle one drawer, one shelf, or one cupboard at a time. And here’s a pro tip: invest in a few storage boxes or baskets. You’ll be amazed at how tidy things look when you simply hide them away in neat little containers. Just try not to end up with a million baskets of random junk – that’s not the goal here.

  1. Sell It, Baby!

If you’re sitting on a pile of stuff you no longer need, why not make some money from it? There’s a whole world of second-hand buyers out there who would happily take your stuff off your hands. Websites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or even a classic car boot sale are your best friends here. Not only will you free up space, but you’ll also pad your wallet with a bit of extra cash – win-win!

  1. Donate and Feel Good

If selling your stuff sounds like too much hassle, donate it. There are countless charities that would love to take your unwanted goods. Old clothes, books, and furniture can all find a new home and make someone else’s day. Plus, you get the warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing you’re doing something good. Clutter-clearing karma? Yes, please.

  1. Get Creative with Decluttering

If you’re struggling to part with things, try setting yourself a little challenge. How about getting rid of one item a day for a month? Or only keeping things that “spark joy” (thanks, Marie Kondo)? Make a game out of it, and before you know it, you’ll have a clutter-free home and way more space to do the things you love – like actually using that bread maker… or not.

You can get your clutter under control!
