Design Tips That Make Your Space Feel More Open And Inviting

If you want an open, inviting home, you might assume you’ve got to tear down walls or install some massive windows, but although those things could certainly be part of the plan if you want – opening things up in a literal sense could be the ideal way to go – they don’t have to be because there are plenty of other things you can do. With that in mind, here are some design tips that make your space feel more open and inviting; read on to find out more.

Play With Vertical Space

How often have you looked up and considered how much space you’ve got up there? Probably not all that often, but the fact is that you could be missing out on making your home feel more open and inviting if you’re not using the vertical space you have and instead you’re putting all your furniture and other stuff on floor level all the time.

If you’re able to add some tall bookshelves, hanging plants, wall-mounted lights, and other ideas like these, the eye will be drawn upwards, and that’s always going to make a room seem taller. If you use vertical elements, you can also keep the floor open, and that’s handy if you’ve not got much room. With all of this going on, you’ll usually get the storage you need too but you’ll make the room feel larger at the same time.

Keep Windows Uncluttered

It might sound obvious, but even a little bit of clutter on a windowsill can be a problem, mainly because it stops the natural light from being able to get inside as much as it would otherwise be able to. Keep your windowsills clear and empty (and if you don’t put furniture in front of the windows), and you’ll find things are a lot brighter, which is ideal for making your home feel welcoming and inviting.

On top of that, it’s a good idea to try using sheer curtains or blinds instead of heavy curtains so you can maximise that light altogether. And if privacy is a concern, you could always install frosted glass or add a window film so you still get plenty of light but no one can see in.

Make It Open Plan

We did say that you don’t have to take any walls down to create an open and inviting home, but if you want to, then it’s certainly going to give you what you want! Open plan living means that you’ll essentially have one big room that houses your living spaces and kitchen, and ideally it should also flow to the outside nicely as well, giving you a smooth space that feels cohesive and comfortable.

This isn’t a job you can do by yourself, especially when you consider the specialist equipment you’ll need and the fact that some walls need to stay put because they’re load-bearing. That’s why it’s wise to consult with architects to ensure you’re not only making the most of the space but that the job will be done safely and with great results.
